This was a bad week for big movies, with not a single first run release is even worth rating a solid purchase, never mind being a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. There were a few other contenders for the title, including Dirty Harry Collection on DVD or Blu-ray. However, I found it impossible to decide which format was the better deal. Had the Blu-ray provided anything more than High Definition, or been a more reasonable price compared to the DVD, it would have been an easier choice. One of them is the DVD Pick of the Week, I just don't know which one. On a side note, there is an immense flood of Blu-ray releases, including a few I thought were coming out previously.

According Amazon, there are nearly 900 DVDs being released this week, half of which are episodes of Charlie Rose. Even if we ignored those releases, it was still a busy week, especially at the high end with several contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. In the end I could narrow it down to three selection,
Brick -
Buy from Amazon,
CSA: The Confederate States of America -
Buy from Amazon and
Inside Man -
Buy from Amazon. But I couldn't decide between those so all three earn the title: DVD Pick of the Week.

It was another busy week for releases with five of them charting, including three finishing first through third on. Leading the way on the rental charts was
The Family Stone with $8.00 million over the week.

There were eighth new releases to chart this week led by
Aeon Flux; however, while the film topped the charts, its $6.08 million in rentals was hardly impressive.

It was a big week for DVD releases, but mostly in terms of quantity and not quality. The two releases I was looking forward to the most were
Match Point -
Buy from Amazon and
Crumb -
Special Edition, but neither DVD is overloaded with special features. On the other hand,
American Dad - Volume 1 is packed, but I never really got into the show. I don't think any of the releases really deserves to by the DVD Pick of the Week, but
Crumb -
Special Edition is the best of the bunch.

The only opening of note for
Syriana over the weekend was Turkey where the film placed third with $211,000 on 62 screens. Without a major opening, the film fell 35% to $3.68 million on 1992 screens in 43 markets and now has $27.35 million, which is still a disappointing total.

A number one opening in France, as well as a slew of smaller debuts, pushed
Underworld: Evolution into sixth place on the international charts with $4.98 million on 1473 screens in 20 markets for a running tally of $36.12 million after nearly two months in release. In France the film earned $1.84 million on 346 screens while it managed the same feat in a trio of Asian markets: Taiwan with $600,000 on 75 screens, Malaysia with $310,000 on 45, and Hong Kong with $290,000 on 25. Interestingly, the
original was banned in Malaysia.

Casanova opened in several major markets more than doubling its screen count, and that helped it climb to sixth place over the weekend. Its best market was Italy where the film came in third place with $1.05 million on 243 screens over the weekend and $1.14 million in total while it also managed a third place finish during a very close race in Spain with $919,000 on 250 screens. Its other major market debut was the U.K., but there it had to settle for fifth with $959,000 on 351 screens. Overall the film made $5.17 million on 1699 screens in 18 markets for an international total of just $11.68 million so far.

As expected,
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was easily able to win the weekend race but it was able to do so in such a fashion that it lifted the entire box office. Week-to-week the overall box office saw a mind-blowing 42.2% increase, while more importantly, it was up 15.2% from the same weekend last year. That helped cut the year-to-date deficit to 5%, which is still a significant drop-off, but not the disaster that it was earlier in the year.

Flightplan fell out of the top five with $5.13 million on 2,430 screens in 38 markets for a total of $94.65 million on the international scene.
It did fall from second to sixth on this week's charts, but it should still reach $100 million by this time next week. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in second place with $2.14 million on 416 screens for a two-week total of $6.59 million.

The 2005 box office enters its final sprint to the finish line with two potential monster hits opening within 5 days of each other, the first tonight. Looking at the pure mathematics of it, there's almost no chance of 2005 catching up to 2004, or even 2003 or 2002. However, if Narnia and Kong both out perform, they can help cut the gap to something respectable.

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Despite being there being two weeks between updates, this was not a very strong week. Sure, there were plenty of websites updated, but not a lot that really stood out as being award worthy. In the end it was
Clerks 2: The Passion of the Clerks -
Official Site that was the best of the bunch and hopefully it will continue to grow and earn that award.

The post holiday weekend was particularly brutal this year with the overall box office in free-fall.
Receipts were down 47.6% from last weekend and it was also down compared to last year, although by a mere 0.5%. Year-to-date, 2005 is still behind by 6% and we're quickly running out of chances to catch up.

The first weekend of December is usually not a very strong; too many people are trying to get their gift shopping done and are way too busy to check out a movie. (I, on the other hand, have been finished for weeks now.) Without much in the way of competition, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will likely win the weekend race for the third time in the film's run.

I learned a lot this week. For instance, I learned that when you removed the power supply from your computer, you should write down where each connection goes so you know how to put it back. To make a long story short, I'm writing this on my parents' computer and I'm picking up mine from the repair shop at 6:00 p.m. (I'm such an idiot.) In the meantime, here are the abbreviated predictions for the top five this week...

After Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire saved last month, we have two potential monster hits leading the way this month. However, both will be compared to Lord of the Rings, and neither will be able to live up to that high standard.
Even so, it should be a better month than December last year, but will it be too little, too late to save 2005's box office?
Since this is the heart of award season, there are plenty of films that are first opening in limited release.
Some will get a wide release later in the month, while others, like Munich, The New World and Match Point, don't open wide untill after the new year, and will appear in January's preview.

As Christmas approaches, each week more and more DVDs are being released that theoretically would make perfect gifts.
But for the DVD Pick of the Week I went with the perfect Re-Gift, Seinfeld - Re-Gift Set.
There are a couple others I would recommend (like the King Kong - Collector's Edition), but overall it feels like a really slow week.

Slow week with most of the sites being merely average or too early in their development to tell if the film is an award winning site or not. So in the end I decided not to hand out the award to any site. Hopefully next week things will pick up.
