Synopsis

Paul actually wanted to make a film about the flight of his grandfather and his Jewish wife from the Nazis to Cuba in 1939. But the money is not enough, and so he decides to instead stage a play about the dramatic experiences of the two: how they translate to Cuba by boat, ask for asylum there, are rejected and sent back to Europe. The theater group, confronted with the topics of displacement, flight and asylum seeker, soon came up with the idea of including refugees from Africa living in the neighboring house in the production and to have the Jewish refugees of the time portrayed as extras. In this way, past and present quickly mingle, and the theater becomes a meeting place where topics such as compassion, acceptance and racism, as well as the conditions of flight back then, today and tomorrow, are discussed.
