Synopsis

A look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

Home Market Releases for September 19th, 2017

September 20th, 2017

The Big Sick

I think it is a really good week on the home market. The biggest release of the week is Wonder Woman, which is also one of the best wide releases of the year. The extras are strong and the Blu-ray Combo Pack / 3D Combo Pack are Pick of the Week contenders. It isn’t the winner, as The Big Sick is one of the best movies I’ve seen all year and the DVD / Blu-ray Combo Pack is loaded with extras. More...

Theater Averages: Manchester is Something to Sea, Earns $64,125

November 23rd, 2016

Manchester by the Sea

Manchester by the Sea led the way on the theater average chart with an average of $64,125 in four theaters. That isn’t the best average we’ve seen this year, but it is fourth place for a 2016 release. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned first place on the overall chart and second place with $17,954 on this chart. Nocturnal Animals earned an average of $13,315 in 37 theaters. That’s an impressive average considering how wide it was playing. Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened earned an average of $11,745 in two theaters. Meanwhile, the re-release of Daughters of the Dust was the final film in the $10,000 club earning $10,842 in its lone theater. More...

2016 - Awards Season: Independent Spirit Awards - Nominations

November 23rd, 2016

Moonlight

The Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced last night and thus the 2016 Awards Season begins. There were a few surprises and some snubs to discuss, but for the most part, there’s not a lot nominations that broke the established narrative. It’s because there isn’t really an established narrative. This means films that earn nominations here have a much better chance of doing well going forward and Moonlight looks like it could rise up as a result. More...

Theater Averages: Godzilla Stomps All Over the Theater Average Chart

October 19th, 2016

Shin Godzilla

Shin Godzilla had a number of special screenings over the weekend and its daily theater count ranged from 26 to 311. This made a huge mess of the theater average chart. I guess adding up the averages for the individual days would be the best, giving it an average of $5,271. However, even that doesn’t take into account the many theaters which only had limited showings on the single day they played the film. It’s a mess.

As for films that are a lot easier to deal with, Miss Hokusai topped that chart with an average of $12,262 in two theaters. This is another hit for GKIDS. Certain Women was right behind with an average of $12,180 in five theaters. Christine was playing in just one theater, earning $11,744. More...

Weekend Estimates: The Accountant Pencils in $24.71 Million Weekend

October 16th, 2016

The Accountant

As expected, The Accountant will be the comfortable winner at the box office this weekend, with Warner Bros. projecting a $24.71 million debut for the thriller. That’s almost identical to the opening enjoyed by The Girl on the Train last weekend, and about average for Ben Affleck. His previous Fall outings all opened in somewhat the same vicinity: Gone Girl hit $37.5 million on opening weekend in 2014; Argo posted $19.5 million in 2012, ahead of a very fruitful box office run and eventual Best Picture award; The Town started out with $23.8 million in 2010.
