After Avatar dominated last week's list, the selection of releases this week is not any better. There are only two first run releases of note, It's Complicated on DVD and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus on Blu-ray, while there are a few smaller releases that are also worth picking up. To find the Pick of the Week, however, we have to travel back in time as a couple of late releases finally found their way to my desk this week. Those late releases are Defendor (Buy from Amazon: DVD or Buy from Amazon.ca: Blu-ray) and Yesterday Was A Lie (DVD) and they share the Pick of the Week honors.

Defendor is a movie that was never going to be a massive hit, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's a Canadian film. It's also a low budget film, costing jut $4 million to make (although I suppose it's redundant to call it low budget and Canadian). Finally, it's by first-time writer / director Peter Stebbings, who is better know for his acting. The fact that it earned a theatrical release down South, albeit a small one, is a bit of a miracle. The fact that it wasn't able to find a theatrical audience is not. Is this a hidden gem? Or should the film be happy with whatever audience it can find?

Another slow week when it comes to first-run releases, the biggest of which is Pirate Radio, which opened in just under 900 theaters and made just over $8 million at the box office. The only other new release of interest is Defendor, which is coming out on DVD in the States and also on Blu-ray in Canada, the latter of which is the Puck of the Week.

Ghost Writer remained in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $18,350, which is a strong hold from its opening last week despite expanding its theater count from 4 to 43. Just a hair behind was A Prophet, which opened in second place with an average of $18,197 in 9 theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Art of the Steal with an average of $13,006 in 3 theaters.

Starting the weekend off with a pun so bad it makes me embarrassed that I wrote it. ... Embarrassed and a little proud. There are a few limited releases of note, including A Prophet, which recently earned an Oscar nomination. However, the movie I'm most interested in is the Canadian release, Defendor.

Oscar night is approaching, a fact which has influence on both the most significant limited release of the week, and the relative weakness of limited releases in general.
It would be hard to argue that 2010 Oscar Shorts is not the biggest release of the week, but the most interesting release might be Defendor.
