Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales: Legion and Avatar Claim Top Spot

May 25th, 2010

While this week's collection of new releases was less than impressive, there were still a number of bright spots on this week's DVD Sales Chart. DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 11th, 2010

With a lot of competition from summer blockbusters, it comes as no surprise that the quality and quantity of releases is way down this week. The best selling release is Daria: The Complete Series, which is also clearly the Pick of the Week. More...

March 7th, 2010

The Princess and the Frog may have slipped out of the top five internationally, but it still added $8.32 million on 3053 screens in 28 markets for a total of $143.18 million. It had no major market openings again this week, but it added $2.84 million on 689 screens over the weekend in France for a total of $27.30 million after a month of release there. This weekend the film debuted in Japan, which could help it return to the top five. Regardless, it has made enough money that it should show a profit, eventually. More...

The Streak Ends in More Ways Than One

February 9th, 2010

In a shocking development, Avatar didn't win at the box office race over the weekend. Instead, the romantic drama Dear John, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, took top spot. Unfortunately, while Dear John did much better than expected, the overall box office was still weak. Total box office was $114 million, which was 9% lower than last weekend and 26% lower than the same weekend last year. Any Oscar Bounce for Avatar?

February 4th, 2010

It appears Avatar will walk away with yet another victory at the box office and it appears likely that it will set yet another record in the process. There are some factors that make the box office potential of all films a little more fluid this weekend. This includes the Super Bowl, which should draw away a lot of potential ticket buyers. Secondly, the Oscar nominations should help Avatar and a few other holdovers still playing in multiplexes. Depending on which factor is greater, we could keep pace with last year, or the slump could continue. More...

An Iceberg Named Avatar

February 2nd, 2010

It was a good new / bad news weekend at the box office. On the one hand, Avatar continued to set records and that helped 2010 start with the highest-grossing January of all time. On the other hand, new releases continue to under-perform, leading the overall box office to slump to $125 million. That was 13% lower than last weekend, but more importantly 1.1% lower than the same weekend last year, which is the third weekend in a row that 2010 was below 2009's pace. Granted, year-to-date 2010 is still ahead of 2009 by 5.5% at $1.06 billion to $1.00 billion, but if new releases are not stronger in February, that could change. More...

Weekend Estimates: Avatar Hits $2 Billion with Seventh Weekend Win

January 31st, 2010

Another weekend, another set of records for Avatar. In fact, there aren't many that it's left to break now, but it did reach one milestone that no movie has ever achieved before this weekend: $2 billion in global box office receipts. Its worldwide total now stands at an estimated $2.039 billion thanks to another big weekend both at home and abroad. In North America, it scored $30 million, according to Fox's Sunday estimates, to take it to $594.4 million in total. That will give it the biggest seventh weekend in history (see chart), and is down just 14% from last weekend. At this rate, it will overtake Titanic and become the top-grossing movie in North America on Tuesday or Wednesday this week. More...

The Unstoppable Avatar

January 28th, 2010

The consensus among box office trackers has Avatar remaining in top spot, again. The real question is whether or not the new releases will pull their weight and help 2010 stop its mini-slump. The best new release from last year was Taken, which didn't start like a movie destined to reach nearly $150 million, but it is unlikely either of the new releases will come that close to its nearly $25 million opening. Contest - Dark Movie, Bright Prizes

January 22nd, 2010

There's only one saturation level release next week, The Edge of Darkness, which is the target in this week's box office prediction contest. But while the movie might be dark, the prizes will be bright. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for The Edge of Darkness. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Touched By an Angel: Inspiration Collection: Faith on DVD and Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You Special Edition on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Touched By an Angel: Inspiration Collection: Love on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2010 Preview: January

January 1st, 2010

2009 ended breaking lots of records, so 2010 starts both on a high note, and with a bit of trepidation. On the one hand, there are several holdovers that should continue to be major players at the box office for the next few weeks, which can only help. On the other hand, there's almost no chance 2010 will get off to as strong a start as 2009 did, since some of what happened at the box office during January of 2009 was unprecedented. More...

DVD Sales: Legion and Avatar Claim Top Spot

May 25th, 2010

While this week's collection of new releases was less than impressive, there were still a number of bright spots on this week's DVD Sales Chart. Firstly, we had a new number one, as Legion led the way with 457,000 units sold. However, in terms of total dollars, it was second with $8.21 million in sales. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 11th, 2010

March 21st, 2010

International Details: Princess hits Regal Milestone

March 14th, 2010

The Princess and the Frog remained in sixth place with $5.18 million on 3019 screens in 35 markets for a total of $149.82 million internationally and $253.53 million worldwide. This past week it opened in Japan, struggling into fifth place with $1.02 million on 363 screens. Even with that disappointing result, it should do well enough on the home market to show a profit relatively soon. More...

International Details: Princess Still Powerful

March 7th, 2010

The Princess and the Frog may have slipped out of the top five internationally, but it still added $8.32 million on 3053 screens in 28 markets for a total of $143.18 million. It had no major market openings again this week, but it added $2.84 million on 689 screens over the weekend in France for a total of $27.30 million after a month of release there. This weekend the film debuted in Japan, which could help it return to the top five. Regardless, it has made enough money that it should show a profit, eventually. More...

International Details: Shutter Island is International Destination

February 28th, 2010

Shutter Island started its international run with a sixth place finish this past weekend, earning $9.28 million on 1229 screens in 9 markets. The film opened in first place in Spain with $3.25 million on 406 screens. It had to settle for second place in Australia, in a virtual tie with Valentine's Day at $2.50 million on 250 screens. It's way too early to tell where the film will end up, but matching its domestic run internationally is a solid goal. More...

International Details: Princess Still Treated Like Royalty Overseas

February 21st, 2010

As expected, The Princess and the Frog reached $100 million internationally just before the weekend started, ultimately overtaking its domestic total. It had no major market openings over the past weekend, but it managed to rise to first place in France with $4.09 million on 697 screens for a total of $17.31 million after three. It also remained solid in the U.K., adding $2.36 million on 501 screens for a total of $6.58 million. Overall, it pulled in $11.29 million on 3349 screens in 34 markets for a total of $111.94 million internationally and $213.69 million worldwide. More...

With no major market openings left, the film will likely fall further down the chart over the coming weeks, but it has already made a huge profit, so Fox will be more than happy.

Year-to-date, 2010 has brought it $1.21 billion, which is 1.2% more than last year; however, for the first time admissions are down, by 0.8%. This is a troubling sign. More...
