Summer blockbuster might fill multiplexes at the moment, but the home market releases are terrible. None of the first run releases are that worthy, and there are few limited release, catalogue titles, and TV on DVD to back them up. The best of the best all came from that last category with Eureka - Season 3.0, The IT Crowd - The Complete Second Season, Parker Lewis Can't Lose - Season One, and Stargate - Atlantis - Season Five all being in consideration for DVD Pick of the Week. I can't decide which one deserves the title the most, and while four releases are a bit much to be called DVD Pick of the Week, I'm going to call them all co-winners.

Valentino: The Last Emperor remained on the top of the per theater chart with an average of $15,553 in two theaters. The overall number one film of the past weekend, Monsters vs. Aliens, opened in second place on the per theater chart with an average of $14,454 in more than 4,000 theaters. Ramin Bahrani finally had a box office hit, as Goodbye Solo earned nearly $40,000 in three theaters for an average of $12,681. Hopefully it will continue its strong run in the coming weeks. Sin Nombre was down less than 14% to $70,000 in 6 theaters for an average of $11,695. Meanwhile, American Swing rounded out the $10,000 club with $10,174.

Not a strong week for limited releases with only one film, Goodbye Solo, earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. And I'm not sure that will be enough for that movie to thrive, as its writer / director doesn't have a strong track record at the box office. Hopefully this will be his breakout success.

An even dozen limited releases this week and strangely they are even divided between the films playing in just a few theaters or less, and those playing in a couple dozen theaters or more. Included in the latter group is Saawariya, the first Bollywood film released by a major studio, and No Country for Old Men, a serious Oscar contender.
