Holiday Gift Guide - Part IV

December 23rd, 2006

Part IV of the Holiday Gift Guide is aptly named because if you are still shopping for gifts at this late date, every other word out of your mouth has exactly four letters. Hopefully there's enough ideas in these four installments to find a gift for everyone on your list. More...

DVD Releases for August 1, 2006

July 31st, 2006

The first full week of the month is usually quite busy, however, since the DVD coming out tomorrow had to be shipped in July, this is not the case this time around. In fact, there was only one contender for DVD Pick of the week, V for Vendetta - 2-Disc Special Edition, and since I'm 90% sure an even better Ultra Edition is coming out, it fails to win that coveted honor. Next week we should have a much better selection of DVDs. More...

Home Market Numbers - Building Blocks of Success

June 24th, 2006

16 Blocks shared the top of the charts with The Pink Panther. 16 Blocks led on the rental charts $6.85 million to $6.55 million, but the two films finished in opposite order on the sales charts. More...

DVD Releases for June 20, 2006

June 19th, 2006

It may seem like a really slow week for DVD releases, but this is because several releases were grouped together. I have one section for the five Alfred Hitchcock releases instead of spreading them out and padding the word count. Taking that into account, the week is about average in terms of quantity, and quality. There were a handful of contenders this week, and a few that looked good in advance but the special feature were a let down. In the end I went with NewsRadio - The Complete Fourth Season as the best of the best while Married With Children - The Complete Fifth Season earns and honorable mention. ... "Go with him." (If you get that reference, you probably already have the latter release pre-ordered.) More...

DVD Releases for June 13, 2006

June 12th, 2006

It's another busy week both in terms of quantity and especially quality with half-a-dozen films in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. In the end I narrowed it down to The Dead Zone - The Complete Fourth Season, although I will probably end up buying all of them. More...

Mountain Breaks the Bank

December 13th, 2005

Brokeback Mountain had the best per theatre average of the year, and the best for a Live Action film of all time. The film earned an unbelievable $547,425 in 5 theatres for an average of $109,485. If that was the only film on this week's chart it would have been an impressive week; however, Memoirs of a Geisha also had a stellar start, earning nearly $700,000 in 8 theatres for an average of $85,313. Other members of the $10,000 club include the overall box office leader, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe with $18,130 and Transamerica, which just manage to earn a spot with $10,686, which was more than 50% lower than last weekend. International Details: Flightplan has Bumpy Landing

December 11th, 2005

Flightplan fell out of the top five with $5.13 million on 2,430 screens in 38 markets for a total of $94.65 million on the international scene. It did fall from second to sixth on this week's charts, but it should still reach $100 million by this time next week. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in second place with $2.14 million on 416 screens for a two-week total of $6.59 million. More...

Her Shoes Fall out of Fashion

December 4th, 2005

Here's this week's round-up of international box office numbers.

In Her Shoes fell out of the top five this week with $3.95 million on 2,050 screens in 23 markets for a $30.60 million international box office. The film held up amazingly well in Spain, dropping just 8% to $810,000 on 290 screens, but it wasn't as fortunate in France where it lost more than half its opening, earning $400,000 on 293 screens, falling out of the top ten in the process. It suffered a similar fate during its third weekend in the U.K. where it was down 55% to $736,000 on 268 screens, but the film already has $7.06 million there, which is better than its domestic run if you take into account the relative sizes of the two markets. Syriana Strikes it Rich

November 29th, 2005

Syriana made an unbelievable start over the Thanksgiving weekend, earning just shy of $375,000 in 5 theatres for a per theatre average of $74,900 — easily the best over the weekend. Last week's winner, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was pushed into second place with an average of $14,185 in 3858 theatres, which would have been an impressive opening for most blockbusters. More...

Zorro Leaves its Mark

November 27th, 2005

The Legend of Zorro fell from second to sixth this week and because of that its quest from $100 million internationally took a serious hit. Over the weekend the film pulled in $4.20 million on 4062 screens in 62 markets for a running tally of $80.73 million. In France the film fell 57% to $1.01 million over the weekend and $14.80 million during its four-week run while it had a similar drop-off in Spain where it was down 56% to $475,000 over the weekend and $9.10 million in total. The box office was less kind in Russia, (down 68% to $136,000); Germany, (down 70% to $232,000) and the U.K., (down 83% to $120,000). More...

Corpse Bridesmaid

November 20th, 2005

The Corpse Bride missed the top five by the narrowest of narrow margins losing out to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit $5.50 million to $5.45 million. The film earned its $5.45 million on 2586 screens in 28 markets pushing its total to $53.4 million total at the international box office. In South Korea the film fell 43% to $753,000 on 114 screens, which is better than average for the market. And the film is also doing well in Italy adding $764,000 on 268 screens to its $2.67 million running tally there, $700,000 in France for a $8 million box office, and $462,000 in Japan for a $7.0 million box office. There was a surprise leader at the top of the Per Theatre Charts, with Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic earning an impressive average of $17,782 in its 7 theatres. Next up was Pride and Prejudice, which reached the top ten with $2.9 million in 215 for an average of $13,326. Lastly, there was Gay Sex in the 70s, which actually won last week's race after all the late figures came in; this weekend is added $11,744 to its box office while still playing in the one theatre. More...

Chicken's Little Start on the International Scene is Lucrative

November 13th, 2005

Chicken Little started its international run with day-and-date debuts in 9 markets earning $5.54 million on 900 screens, just missing the top five in the process. Its best market was kid-friendly Mexico with $3.1 million on 600 screens, which is about on par with its opening domestically. On the other hand, the film broke records in Malaysia with $477,000 on 40 screens. Other results include a first place debuts in Russia with $1.1 million on 197 screens and in Taiwan with $463,000 on 18 screens, (including previews). More...

Other markets include $360,000 in the U.K. for a $3.6 million total there and $140,000 in Poland for $1.1 million. Add it up and you have $4.2 million for the weekend and $9.6 million in total. The Clubhouse is Full

October 25th, 2005

Shopgirl topped the Per Theatre Charts this weekend, earning $230,000 on 8 theatres for an average of $28,711. The film I thought would lead the way, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, came in second with $180,000 on 8 theatres for an average of $22,583. Both of those films should find mainstream success. More...

This also means there were two films that did so well in their local markets that they managed to place in the top five overall. More...
