Synopsis
The Orphanage follows the life of one of the children seen in Wolf and Sheep, Qodrat. Set in the late 1980s, he is now 15 years old. Qodrat now lives in the streets of Kabul illegally selling movie tickets by day and watching Bollywood films by night. When he is caught, he is put in a Soviet orphanage. As his life shifts from a carefree hand-to-mouth existence to a stricter hierarchy ruled by bullies, the film oscillates between scenes of harsh reality and pure film fantasy. Qodrat’s love of film soon infiltrates his daydreams–full of action-packed heroics–as a buffer for his considerably more dangerous real-life situation. He befriends a group of boys, including the chess master, Masihullah, his teen nephew Fayaz and the war-obsessed Hasib. As the political situation during the Russian occupation of 1989 begins to change the young boys try to find ways to defend their home.
