Wow. Another week without a single first-run release that struck me as worth picking up. This really is the slowest time of the year for DVD releases. That said, there were a number of other releases that caught my attention, including a couple of TV on DVD releases and a couple of classics from Criterion. The latter include Vampyr - Buy from Amazon and High and Low - Buy from Amazon while the former include Robot Chicken - Star Wars - Buy from Amazon and Spaced - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon. It would be virtually impossible for me to narrow it down to one selection, but Vampyr - Buy from Amazon is the better Criterion release and Spaced - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon is the better TV on DVD release. As with last week, there were so many spotlight reviews that this week's list had to be split into two. Part One can be found here.

Another week without a first-run release that deserves serious consideration for the DVD Pick of the Week award. This means we are left looking at special editions, limited releases, and TV on DVD sets for the best of the week. Sadly there are not a lot of contenders here either. Batman Begins on Blu-ray Standard Edition or Limited Edition is certainly worth picking up, but it is mostly just a port of the HD DVD release and I was hoping for more (like having the extras in High Definition). The Monk / Psych two-pack offers two great shows for a reasonable price, but I'm not sure it's award-worthy. The best this week has to offer is Stargate Atlantis - Season Four - Buy from Amazon, and it is this week's DVD Pick of the Week.

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, a.k.a. Welcome to the Sticks, remained in first place in France with $4.79 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $175.67 million after 8. However, it fell out of the top five internationally with $5.33 million on 963 screens in 4 markets for a total of $187.13 million. In its native market, the film has ticket sales of 19.25 million putting it about three weeks away from topping Titanic's record of 20.64 million while it is closing in on $200 million internationally. Both of those are amazing records, and the film is hardly showing signs of slowing down.

Overall the box office was marginally better than expected with practically every film beating expectations. However, no film really surpassed expectations by any great amount and the overall box office was $95 million, which was almost exactly the same as last weekend. However, it was almost 20% less than the same weekend last year and now 2008 is down more than 3% from last year's pace $2.36 billion to $2.44 billion.

It was a softer than expected weekend at the box office, and expectations were no strong to begin with. Overall the box office brought in $95 million, which was down 11% from last year. More importantly, it was down a staggering 23% from the same weekend last year. Even worse, 2008 is now behind 2007's pace $2.24 billion to $2.28 billion.

Only 11 movies on this week's list, and nearly half of them had no site for the North American release. This made it rather dull reviewing the sites this week, but it did give me a chance to waste an hour or so playing Seashell Shuffle on Nim's Island's Official Site. But despite the addictive nature of that game, the winner of the Weekly Website Award was Leatherheads - Official Site.

April starts of with a... with a... well, it starts this week. We have three wide releases this week, but none seem destined for greatness. In fact, it's a limited release that might have the most exciting box office result of the week, even if it doesn't reach the top ten. On the other end, there should at least be a logjam at the top, giving box office watchers something to talk about.

April is not a good month to release a movie. In fact, it is one of the worst months to release a movie, especially late in the month as the May mega-releases begin to loom large on the horizon and you don't have a lot of time to pull in some cash before summer starts and the competition becomes too much to handle. There are, however, a few limited release this month that have a real shot at expanding. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? could reach $10 million, which would be amazing for a documentary, but it is doubtful it will expand wide.
