DVD Releases for May 04, 2004

May 3rd, 2004

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. There was again an excellent mix of wide releases, limited releases, older films and TV on DVD. And because of the wide section, there should be something for everyone, and for me it's Gilmore Girls - Season 1 - (Buy from Amazon), which is my DVD pick of the week. More...

Hello Lenin!

March 11th, 2004

While The Passion of the Christ finished first on the per theatre charts for the second weekend in a row, it the performance of a smaller movie, Goodbye, Lenin! that stole the show. Its per theatre average climbed nearly 10%. Now a movie having its per theatre average climb after the Oscars isn't surprising. However, Goodbye, Lenin! was ignored by the Oscar nomination committee. So the increase bodes very well for its long term success. More...

Oscars Boost Box Office of Several Films

March 8th, 2004

With its 11 Oscar wins and huge jump in theatre count, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King should have had the largest post-Oscar jump at the box office. And while in raw dollars it did, it was the lesser known The Barbarian Invasions that had the biggest percent jump. The Canadian film and winner of Best Foreign Language Film jumped more than 137% at the box office. Its per theatre average also jumped by nearly 40%, compared to the nearly 20% drop by Return of the King. More...

Oscar Prediction: Best Song

February 27th, 2004

Today's Oscar prediction is for one of the more minor categories, which are often harder to predict than the big awards. But this year, Numbers readers seem to be of one accord on the song destined to pick up the Oscar. More...

Another Sign of Weakness

February 26th, 2004

No movie managed to beak the $10,000 per theatre average this weekend. Overall the best showing was The Battle of Algiers with $9,143. The best new limited release, Lost Boys of Sudan, finished in second place with $7,485. In the mean time, the best wide release was way down the list in 16th place. That film, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen could only manage an average of $3,736. More...

Oscar Prediction: Best Animated Feature

February 23rd, 2004

As Oscar night draws near, we analyze the current voting in our Predict the Oscars competition, and, like CNN on election night, start calling results that we think are looking like racing certainties. We'll be announcing a new projected winner each day leading up to the competition, and giving our final projected results on the afternoon of February 29 - just before the show itself. Today we start with an easy one... Best Animated Feature More...

Four part Harmony

February 19th, 2004

The rerelease of the French musical Umbrellas of Cherbourg topped this week's per theatre average chart with $14,760 in its lone theatre. Three other films very close to each other battling for second place. The overall champ, 50 First Dates finished a strong second with $11,098 in almost 3600 theatres. While Osama spent its second weekend on the list with $10,151. The final film to top $10,000 was the self-distributed Robot Stories. Despite having a tiny distribution budget, the Science Fiction anthology sold out four showings on its way to earning $10,026 in it only theatre. More...

Mormons and Mountains

February 5th, 2004

Only two films topped $10,000 per theatre this week, but the race was top spot was close enough to make it an interesting weekend on the per theatre charts. Touching the Void remained in first place with $14,837, down just 24% percent from last weekend. In second place with $14,311 was Latter Days. It is particularly interesting to see Latter Days perform so well as Madstone Theaters pulled the from its theatres allegedly due to, 'aesthetic reasons.' More...

No Small Fry

January 6th, 2004

In an unusual turn of events, Big Fish saw its per theatre average jump this weekend to $20,356 in 125 theatres. This bodes very well for this Friday when it expands into more than 2000 theatres. Next weekend it may no longer be on top on the per theatre average chart, but should place well on the top five overall. More...
