DVD Releases for October 27th, 2009

October 27th, 2009

It's coming very close to Halloween, which means there are a lot of horror films on this week's list. However, much of these films are of the smaller variety, like Night of the Creeps. Looking at the best of the releases, there are two that jump out at me, both Blu-ray releases. Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure on Blu-ray and The Prisoner - The Complete Series on Blu-ray are both DVD Pick of the Week. More...

International details - Agora Speaks to the Masses

October 19th, 2009

Agora opened in first place in Spain and sixth place internationally with $7.90 million on 462 screens. This is great news, as the film cost $70 million to make and it will need a massive run to break even. It won't have to earn all of it in Spain, on the other hand, and should perform well throughout Europe and when it opens here. More...

G.I. Joe Dominates Per Theater Chart

August 11th, 2009

Not only did G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra win the race to the top of the overall box office chart, it was also the only film to crack the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Its average of $13,654 was about 50% more than the second place film, Cold Souls, which opened with an average of $9,043 in 7 theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart is In the Loop

July 28th, 2009

In the Loop lead the way on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $23,983, and with its reviews, it should be able to expand significantly. (500) Days of Summer landed in second place with an average of $19,244, which is about a third less than its opening weekend average. But it is now playing in 85 theaters, which is more than triple its opening weekend theater count, so this is a fantastic hold. Those were the only films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but The Ugly Truth came relatively close with $9,579. More...

Life's a Beach on the Per Theater Chart

July 14th, 2009

There was a mix of old and new on the top of the Per Theater Chart this week with Humpday opening in first place with an average of $14,369. The Beaches of Agnes was in second place with $13,584 in one theater during its second weekend of release. The overall box office leader, Brüno, was in third place with $11,110. Meanwhile, last week's per theater champ, The Hurt Locker, just managed to remain in the $10,000 club with $10,686, but it also expanded significantly, which makes this achievement even more impressive. International Details - Transformers Involved in Change on Top

July 12th, 2009

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen fell to second place with $57.50 million on 9158 screens in 61 markets for a total of $301.64 million. This puts the film less than $100 million behind the original internationally, which is a lead that won't last long. The film's biggest market of the weekend was South Korea where it placed first adding $7.76 million on 1076 screens to its total of $27.81 million. It also was impressive in China adding $5.2 million on 1009 screens for a total of $41.6 million, while it remained in first place in Australia with $4.95 million on 456 screens over the weekend and $21.51 million after two, and in Italy with $1.39 million on 565 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.06 million, also after two. Per Theater Chart Hurting for New Releases

July 7th, 2009

Only three films managed to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this week, and no new releases were able to top The Hurt Locker. That film led the way with an average or $14,578 in nine theaters, but it will need to strike fast if it wants to expand significantly. The Beaches of Agnes was the best of the new releases, opening with an average of $10,650 in two theaters. Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs opened with an average of $10,171, while the overall number one film, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, just missed the $10,000 market with an average of $9,995. Hurt and Revenge Rise on the Per Theater Chart

June 30th, 2009

The Hurt Locker did something most films about the Iraq War have not been able to do: succeed at the box office. During its opening weekend it earned close to $150,000 in just four theaters for an average of $36,338. The overall number one film, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, managed second place with an average of $25,736, and nearly double that since Wednesday. Meanwhile, last week's number one film on the per theater average, Whatever Works, landed in third with $10,280. More...

Whatever Really Works on the Per Theater Chart

June 23rd, 2009

Whatever Works led all releases on the per theater chart this weekend, earning $266,000 in 9 theaters for an average of $29,574; however, given its mixed reviews, I'm a little doubtful about its chances to expand over the coming weeks. The overall box office leader, The Proposal, also reached the $10,000 plateau with an impressive average of $11,004, while the re-release of Brighton Rock was the only other such film at $10,626 in one theater. Weekend Estimates: Bullock's Best Betters Black

June 21st, 2009

Bullock's previous best was the $17.5 million opening for Premonition in 2007, so this is a tremendous weekend for her. More...
