Synopsis

A deconstruction of the classic fairytale, The Sleeping Beauty. Cursed at birth by an evil fairy, Anastasia is destined to prick her finger and die at the age of sixteen. When three feckless fairy sisters discover this they hatch a plan to alter the curse: rather than die, Anastasia will sleep for 100 years. While in slumber, Anastasia comes of age through a series of vivid dreams, filled with charming princes, dwarves, gypsies and magical creatures. When she reawakens a fully-formed adolescent, she finds that in real life, happy endings are more elusive than in our fantasies.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 8th, 2011

November 7th, 2011

It's a rather mixed week on the home market. Granted, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 is coming out this week, but it doesn't make its home market debut till Friday. Also, after the Harry Potter releases, there's a huge drop in quality. Given the issue with the Harry Potter releases, it's best to wait till next year and grab the ultimate editions. I'm not sure there's anything here that rises to the level of Pick of the Week. In the end I went with Captain America: The First Avenger on Blu-ray Combo Pack, even though it didn't come out this week. However, the screener was late and it is the best release on this week's list. More...

Project: Limited Release

July 8th, 2011

After a few weeks of very impressive performances on the limited release front earlier in the summer, there hasn't been as much success lately. It is unlikely this week will produce a major hit, but there are a couple documentaries that deserve to be seen. Project Nim and Beats, Rhymes, and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest are both earning Oscar-worthy reviews and I wouldn't be shocked if one or both are on the short-list at the end of the year.
