Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

Weapons found itself at the top of the domestic box office over the weekend, scoring $10.47 million in its fourth weekend for a 24-day total of $132.66 million, outpointing the 50th anniversary release of Jaws and newcomer Caught Stealing by roughly $830,000 and $2.67 million, respectively. Despite its strong run at the top, it will slip out of first place (for good this time) as a flurry of new films make their way into theaters. More...

Theater counts: Caught Stealing robs Freakier Friday from fourth straight widest release

Caught Stealing

Heading into its third weekend, two-time box office champ Weapons ceded the spotlight to a surprise contender: Netflix’s animated musical KPop Demon Hunters. The two-night event film made an unexpected splash, pulling in an estimated $19 million across roughly 1,700 locations. While Weapons aims to reclaim the top spot, it’ll have to battle through a trio of new challengers to return to the winner’s circle. More...

Freakier Friday

Entering its second weekend, Weapons once again claimed the top spot at the domestic box office, bringing in over $24 million. The thriller outpaced its closest competitor by a comfortable $10 million margin and made quick work of Nobody 2, which debuted in third place with a modest $9.25 million. Although several new titles hit theaters this weekend, none appear poised to disrupt the current box office hierarchy. More...

Freakier Friday

Newcomer Weapons blasted into first place at last weekend’s box office, firing up $43.5 million in its opening frame. The action-thriller outgunned second-place finisher Freakier Friday by roughly $15 million over the three-day span. Both films pushed the former chart-topper, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, down to third. Now in its third weekend, Fantastic Four added just under $13 million, bringing its 17-day domestic total to over $230 million. More...

Freakier Friday

In its second weekend, The Fantastic Four: First Steps scored a shaky $39 million, pushing its 10-day haul to a substantial $197 million and retaining its throne as the top film at the domestic box office. As the superhero juggernaut continues its reign, four new wide releases step into theaters, eager to dethrone the champ. More...

Theater counts: New challengers step up, but The Fantastic Four holds its ground as the widest release

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps soared out of the gate with an impressive $118 million haul at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, cementing its status as a summer blockbuster heavyweight. The reboot’s strong debut gave Marvel’s first family a commanding lead, but the road ahead isn’t without obstacles. This weekend brings fresh competition in the form of The Naked Gun, a slapstick revival aiming to tickle audiences, and The Bad Guys 2, the animated sequel with a loyal following and plenty of momentum. With these newcomers entering the fray, The Fantastic Four will need to hold its ground to stay on top of the box office charts. More...
