Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: The Fantastic Four blasts off into 4,125 theaters this weekend

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Superman continues to dominate the box office, with the David Corenswet-led blockbuster easily fending off new releases I Know What You Did Last Summer and Smurfs. In its second weekend, Superman pulled in over $58 million, bringing its 10-day domestic total to an impressive $236.2 million. However, the reigning box office champion will face stiff competition as a major Marvel title enters the ring. More...

Weekend projections: Superman easily sees off new releases

July 20th, 2025

Superman

Superman will stay top of the box office charts comfortably this weekend, thanks partly to a very respectable 54% decline from its opening (right in line with our model’s prediction, but better than industry expectations). With Jurassic World Rebirth also holding on well in its third weekend, I Know What You Did Last Summer was consigned to a third-place opening, and Smurfs will land fourth this weekend. More...

Theater counts: Superman ascends to widest release in its second weekend

July 17th, 2025

Superman

High-flying Superman opened to a sizable $125 million in its weekend debut, pushing Jurassic World Rebirth down to second place; however, the latter still snagged just over $40 million in its second attempt, finishing out the three-day stretch with a total domestic cume of $232 million. Those films will contend with a trio of newcomers this weekend as Smurfs, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Eddington make their way into theaters. More...

Theater counts: Superman flies into theaters, while Jurassic World maintains its spot as the widest release

Jurassic World Rebirth

The Fourth of July weekend turned up some hefty numbers for newcomer Jurassic World Rebirth as the latest in the long-running Jurassic Park franchise snatched up just over $92 million during the three-day weekend and nearly $148 million since opening the previous Wednesday. The three-day opening figure places the film directly in the middle for best domestic openers in the franchise. Rebirth will once again retain its spot as the widest release but will unfortunately take a backseat to a newcomer, but familiar face, with the release of Superman. More...
