Weekend Projections: Marked Ones Frozen Out
January 5, 2014
Given the weather conditions in half the country, this weekend couldn't have a more appropriate winner at the box office. Disney's Frozen takes top honors again in its 7th weekend in release after previously topping the chart the weekend of December 6th. The film is projected to earn $20.72 million this weekend, making it only the fourth film ever to earn more than $20 million at this stage in its theatrical run. Avatar, Titanic and Home Alone are the other three (and see full list of 7th weekends here). Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones was pushed into second spot with a decent $18.2 million opening.
The spin-off will have the worst opening since the first film in the Paranormal Activity franchise, and is the weakest of the lot when one takes into account Paranormal Activity's debut in just 12 theaters. It's still a very healthy number for a film that cost just $5 million to make, and under $20 million to market.
The rest of the top 10 had a familiar look to it, with Grudge Match (surprisingly) showing the best legs, closely followed by Catching Fire and The Wolf of Wall Street.
In limited release, Her picked up 11% since last weekend on the back of some encouraging Awards Season buzz. Inside Llewyn Davis also continues to look strong with $1.175 million from just 156 theaters, and an improved average compared to last weekend.
Still in exclusive engagements, Lone Survivor is doing incredibly well, averaging over $40,000 for a second time in two venues. August: Osage County isn't quite at that level, but nearly $30,000 per theater in five locations is a great base for expansion as its Oscar campaign gets into gear.
