Per Theater Chart: Singing a Love Song

January 15, 2013

Quartet opened on top of the per theater chart with an average of $23,561 in two theaters. This is very impressive, especially for this time of year. Amour expanded from 3 to 15 theaters, but you couldn't tell from its per theater average, as it held very well down just 14% to $17,138.

There was not much else to report as far as new limited releases were concerned. Both Let My People Go! and Struck By Lightning struggled with nearly identical averages of $2,236 and $2,157 respectively.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Rust & Bone reached $1 million early in the weekend and it might have enough left to get to $2 million. That's really good for a foreign language film.
  • As expected, Hyde Park on the Hudson got to $4 million over the weekend. It should have no trouble getting to $5 million, but that's as far as it will go.
  • The Impossible topped $5 million over the weekend and should get to $10 million.
  • Over the weekend, Zero Dark Thirty expanded wide; in fact, it nearly expanded to the saturation level. It made almost $25 million over the weekend and by the end of the weekend was nearly at $30 million. It will have plenty of milestones ahead of it, but it has graduated from this list.
  • Silver Linings Playbook has not yet expanded wide, or even semi-wide, but that didn't stop it from getting to $40 million over the weekend. This is more than many wide releases released in 2012 managed to earn. This is just ahead of What to Expect When Your Expecting and just below The Cabin in the Woods.
