DVD Sales: 42 is the Answer
October 3, 2013
New releases led the way on the July 21st, 2013 edition of the DVD sales chart with new releases taking the top three spots. First place went to 42 with 489,000 units / $7.33 million. This is a good start and after a better than expected domestic run, it is well on its way to profitability.
Evil Dead earned second place with 170,000 units / $3.03 million during its first week of release. That's weak compared to its theatrical numbers, but it did do better on Blu-ray, so its overall opening week on the home market was strong. Bullet to the Head was a disaster in theaters, but did okay on DVD selling 123,000 units / $1.85 million. Tyler Perry's Temptation fell from first to fourth with 116,000 units / $1.98 million over the week for totals of 517,000 units / $8.15 million after two. Despicable Me remained in the top five with 77,000 units / $980,000 for the week. The film has now sold 9.21 million units and generated $150.57 million in total sales after more than two years of release. It has sold an additional 600,000 units, more or less, thanks to Despicable Me 2's theatrical run. It's one of the reasons sequels are so appealing to studios.
Teen Beach Movie opened in ninth place with 44,000 units / $787,000, which very good for a TV movie. Hell on Wheels: The Complete Second Season opened in 23rd spot with 28,000 units / $508,000.
