Limited Releases: Her and Now

There are not a huge number of limited releases on this week's list, but all of the ones that have more than a few reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have outstanding reviews. Her isn't earning the best reviews, but it does have the best combined reviews and buzz and has the best shot at mainstream success. The Past could also expand wide enough to earn some measure of mainstream success, if it can translate its reviews into Awards Season glory.

Jane Adams stars as an actress who is getting on in age and it is hurting her career. When her niece, who is an aspiring actress, comes to stay, she has to confront her situation. The reviews for this film are excellent and would normally be enough for this film to thrive; however, the competition from Awards Season players will likely be just too much. All the Light in the Sky opens tonight at the Cinema Village in New York City, but it has been playing on Video on Demand since the 3rd.
The latest film in the Dhoom franchise. You don't see a lot of Bollywood trilogies. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but that's common for the genre, while it is opening in more than 200 theaters, which is also common for the genre.
Joaquin Phoenix plays a man who is recovering from a recent breakup. He starts a new relationship, with the computer A.I. in his new computer operating system. In lesser hands this could be a really bad movie. However, it is written and directed by Spike Jonze and the reviews are award-worthy. Her opens tonight in six theaters, split between the Los Angeles area, New York City, and Toronto, Canada. It expands in a few dozen theaters on Christmas Day with a planned wide expansion in January. It has the reviews to thrive in limited release, but I'm not sure it will be able to find a mainstream audience.
A film that deals with two relationships. The first is between an Iranian man who left his family in Paris four years ago but has come back to finalize his divorce. The soon-to-be ex-wife has already moved on and begun a relationship with a man whose wife is in a coma. The film's reviews are amazing and given its pedigree, it could be nominated for an Oscar. The Past opens tonight in three theaters, two in New York City and the third in Los Angeles.
A four-hour documentary about the Rijksmuseum, an art museum in Amsterdam. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are perfect at the moment, but the film is four hours long, so it's chances of attracting a mainstream audience are nearly zero. The New Rijksmuseum opened on Wednesday at the Film Forum in New York City.
The latest film from Quentin Dupieux... so you know it is going to be strange. It's a few skits about cops, bad cops, but there's no overall plot. There are also almost no reviews and Quentin Dupieux's previous two films, Rubber and Wrong, failed to catch on with moviegoers. Wrong Cops opens tonight at the IFC Center in New York City.
