DVD Sales: Alvin Hops to the Top

April 10, 2012

Family films led the way on the DVD Sales Chart this week taking the top three spots. This included one and a half new releases. The best selling DVD was Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, which sold 893,000 units / $15.56 million during its first full week of release. This is well below the opening week numbers of its predecessors, but the franchise collapsed at the box office, so this result is not surprising. Hop remained in second place with 697,000 units / $12.53 million during its first full week of release on the home market. In total, it has sold 1.28 million units and generated $22.45 million in sales. The Muppets fell to third place with 258,000 units / $4.65 million lifting its running tally to 990,000 units / $17.11 million. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close opened in fourth place with 222,000 units / $3.32 million. Weak reviews and soft box office numbers means this opening is not a surprise, even though it is a disappointment. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo rounded out the top five with 144,000 unit s/ $2.59 million units for the week and 677,000 units / $11.64 million after two. It will eventually show a profit, but it will take a while longer.

There were no other new releases to reach the top 30.
