Notes and Reactions...
- The Social Network was the big winner tonight, which isn't truly a surprise, as it is been pegged as an Award Season player long before it hit theaters. This could mean its now the favorite to win big at the Oscars, but I would wait till the guilds hand their awards before I came to that conclusion.
- The only other films to win more than one award were The Kids Are All Right and The Fighter. For the former, this is not a good indicator of success at the Oscars, as it won both of its awards for categories limited to Comedies and Musicals, which are notoriously poor predictors. For the latter, it's chances of winning at the Oscars increased.
- The King's Speech only won one award, which is a bit of a disappointment, as it led the way with seven nominations. I still think it's chances on Oscar night will be a little better.
- Besides The Social Network doing so well, the only other real surprise was Melissa Leo winning for The Fighter, as I thought vote-splitting would do her in.
- On the other hand, The Kids Are All Right's two wins, plus Toy Story 3's victory were among the least surprising turn of events. The comedy categories were all rather lop-sided this year and Paul Giamatti was the only one of the three that wasn't an overwhelming favorite going into tonight. He was the favorite, just not an overwhelming one. As for Toy Story 3, it did earn the best reviews of any wide release this year, plus the Pixar name means a lot. If it doesn't win the Oscar, it will be the biggest shock of the night.
- Both Natalie Portman and Colin Firth have to be seen as Oscar favorites, even more so than they were before.
