International Box Office: Immortals Starts as Gods of the Box Office
November 16, 2011
Immortals opened in first place internationally with an estimated $38 million in three dozen theaters. (Because the film's international run is being handled by multiple studios, getting exact numbers was delayed.) Its biggest market was Russia, where it earned first place with $8.68 million on 1,236 screens, while it earned $5.5 million in China. The film also debuted in first place in South Korea with $3.99 million on 633 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.95 million. It took top spot in the U.K. with $3.45 million on 428 screens and in Germany with $2.63 million on 440. On the other hand, it bombed in Japan earning just $1.26 million on 462 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.69 million.
Love Is Not Blind debuted in China and is second place internationally with $29.65 million. Like most Chinese releases, further details were not released.
The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn was right behing with $28.19 million on 7,259 screens in 50 markets, for a total of $160.80 million internationally. It opened in a handful of smaller markets, but its biggest market of the weekend was France, where it earned second place with $5.04 million on 850 screens over the weekend, for a total of $39.19 million after three. The film remained in first place in Spain with $2.80 million on 790 screens over the weekend, for a total of $20.33 million, also after three. It is also still doing well in the U.K. adding $2.46 million on 507 screens over the weekend to its total, which now sits at $20.26 million.
Intouchables saw massive growth in its native France rising 57% to $21.72 million on 603 screens over the weekend, for a total of $40.15 million after two. It also grew in Switzerland up 90% to $489,000 on just 17 screens, for a total of $895,000. The film had the best per screen average in Switzerland over the weekend.
Rockstar debuted in fifth place with $13.59 million on 1,888 screens. This is not as strong as Ra. One's opening, but it's still better than most Bollywood films perform.
Real Steel held onto sixth place with $11.74 million on 5,959 screens in 40 markets, for a total of $147.91 million internationally and $229.52 million worldwide. With debuts in Italy, Spain and Japan ahead, the film should have no trouble getting to $250 million worldwide and as long as it doesn't bomb on the home market, it will earn a sizable profit despite its huge production budget.
That's it for the $10 million films, but way down the list we find Arthur Christmas in 17th place with $3.37 million in 871 screens, all of which came from the U.K.. It's noteworthy because it has yet to open here, so this is should help judge its box office potential here and it's not good news. The film only managed second place in its native market with an equivalent of $20 million here, more or less, and when it opens here, there will be much more intense and direct competition.
Further down the list we find Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes with $1.52 million on 1,493 screens in 4 markets. Its weekend haul is not as important as its running tally, which climbed to over $300 million internationally and now sits at $301.45 million.
