Limited Releases: Iron Grip on the Weekend
December 30, 2011
It's the last chance for films looking to earn some Oscar glory and there are three films on this week's list looking to do just that. Unfortunately, the film earning the most buzz, The Iron Lady, is also earning the weakest reviews out of those three. Fortunately, the other two films are earning perfect reviews (A Seperation) or near perfect reviews (Pariah) so moviegoers have options.

A young father, Thomas Dekker, has to raise his young son by himself because his wife, Lynn Collins, is an alcoholic. When his son is killed due to an act of neglect on his part, he is charged with the death. There are more than a few people comparing this film to Winter's Bone. However, while that film was award-worthy, this film's reviews have fallen from 67% positive to 27% positive. Also, it's already playing on Video on Demand, which will further erode its box office chances. Angels Crest opens tonight at the Cinema Village in New York City.
Meryl Streep plays Margaret Thatcher in this political biopic. She is earning a lot of Oscar buzz, but the film's reviews have fallen below the overall positive level. This film was mentioned on the weekend predictions column, so there's little that needs to be added. Iron Lady opens tonight for an Oscar qualifying run in four theaters (two in New York City and two in Los Angeles) before beginning its regular theatrical run on the 13th of January.
An Iranian film about a wife and husband (Leila Hatami and Peyman Moadi) family having to decide whether or not to leave Iran to raise their daughter in a place with more freedoms, as she wants to do, or stay to look after his father, who has Alzheimer's. This film is Iran's official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Oscars. And since its reviews are currently 100% positive, it has an excellent chance of picking up a nomination. A Seperation opens tonight in three theaters, two in New York City and one in Los Angeles.
Adepero Oduye plays Alike, a 17-year old African-American lesbian who hasn't fully come out of the closet. The film opened on Wednesday and in just two days has made more than $30,000 in four theaters, which bodes very well for its weekend numbers and its potential to expand enough to earn some measure of mainstream success. Pariah opened on Wednesday in four theaters, two in New York City, one in Los Angeles, and one in San Francisco.
