Weekend Estimates: The Town is Top
September 19, 2010
The Town kept up September's decent run at the box office by delivering an higher-than-expected $23.8 million weekend and winning the weekend, according to Warner Bros. Sunday estimate.
With three other wide openers delivering reasonable numbers, this weekend looks as though it will be up overall from last year, in spite of having to compete with the opening of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
Easy A rode good reviews into second place with $18.2 million, while Devil and Alpha and Omega both disappointed somewhat with $12.6 million and $9.2 million respectively.
Both of the latter will probably find better results on video, while Easy A earned enough on a per theater basis that it could still post a decent theatrical run based on strong word-of-mouth.
Resident Evil: Afterlife took a dive in its second weekend, falling 62% to $10.1 million for the weekend, and just shy of $44 million in total.
In limited release, Never Let Me Go had a great opening weekend for Fox Searchlight, earning an average of over $30,000 in four theaters.
It will inevitably expand, and will be looking for some early Oscar buzz.
Jack Goes Boating was less successful, with an average of $7,500 in its four theaters.
Catfish, this week's entry in the "is it fake or is it real?" "documentary" category made a promising start with an average a little over $20,000 in 12 theaters.
It will be looking to emulate last year's run by Paranormal Activity.
