Weekend Estimates: Paranormal Activity Gives Paramount Another Great Weekend
October 24, 2010
Paramount enjoyed a second consecutive weekend at the top of the chart and another impressive opening, according to their estimates released on Sunday morning.
Paranormal Activity 2 showed that last year's hit wasn't a one-off by posting a $41.5 million opening, comfortably more than the first movie managed on any single weekend and the 5th-best weekend ever in October (see complete chart).
The studio's Jackass 3D was down sharply from last weekend, as expected, at $21.6 million, but it has already amassed $87 million, and a drop of 57% is not too bad as things go these days.
Red enjoyed an even better second weekend, falling just 31% to $15 million.
In fact, all the returning movies in the top ten performed well, with down more than 34%.
In fourth place, Clint Eastwood's Hereafter posted a $12 million weekend as it expanded to 2,181 theaters.
While that's arguably a disappointing number, it's about 50% better than Invictus opened with back in December.
Limited releases had a quiet weekend, based on reports received so far.
Boxing Gym from Zipporah was the one stand-out with $7,500 at the IFC Center in New York.
