Weekend Estimates: Obsessed Shows Thrillers Can Sell

After a string of poor results for thrillers, audiences showed they can still have an appetite for the genre this weekend. Obsessed, starring Beyonce Knowles, opened with an impressive $28.5 million, according to Sony's Sunday estimate. Although dwarfed by the opening of Fast & Furious just a few weeks ago, that's still one of the top 10 weekends ever in April (see chart).

Three other movies entered in the top five. Fighting performed better than expected to open with $11.4 million in third place. The Soloist was about in line with expectations with $9.7 million. earth opened in fourth for Disneynature with $8.6 million, again about as expected, but impressive for a documentary.
