International Top Five - First for Final

September 17, 2009

The Final Destination reached first place on the international chart with $16.15 million 2,704 screens in 25 markets for a total of just a hair under $55.00 million. It is already the highest grossing film in the franchise both domestically and worldwide, and it will soon become the undisputed champion when it overtakes the first film's international final figure of close to $60 million. As for this weekend's returns, it opened in first place in Russia with $5.50 million on 621 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.68 million. It was pushed into second place in Germany with $2.15 million on 427 screens over the weekend and $7.16 million in total. Meanwhile, it remained in second place in the U.K. with $1.54 million on 385 screens over the weekend and has made $17.70 million there after just three weeks of release, which is higher than the total box office of any of the other three films in the franchise.

Vicky the Viking opened in second place with $12.41 million on 893 screens in 3 markets for the weekend for a total opening of $14.32 million. Of that, $9.78 million was earned on 746 screens in Germany, which gave the film $10.94 million in total.

Inglourious Basterds fell to third place with $10.35 million on 2,711 screens in 36 markets for a total of $99.93 million. The film remained in first place in France with $3 million over the weekend and $22 million in total. It has likely already reached $100 million internationally, and with an opening in Spain this weekend, and in South Korea, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, and other markets next month, it will have little difficulty becoming the biggest hit in Quentin Tarantino's career.

Up remained in fourth place with $8.18 million on 2,301 screens in 21 markets for a total of $181.30 million. It expanded further into Australia, adding $2.20 million on 308 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.76 million after two weeks of release. It opened in first place in neighboring New Zealand with $480,000 on 88 screens over the weekend and $542,000 in total. It also remained in first place in Brazil with $1.59 million on 329 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $5.13 million. The film opens in Germany this weekend and the U.K. and Italy next month, so it still has a lot of upside ahead of it. By the time it opens in Japan, it could have $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide.

District 9 climbed into the top five with $8.11 million on 1,983 screens in 26 markets for a total of $35.80 million. This includes a third place, $1.93 million opening on 401 screens in Germany. It made a nearly identical $1.96 million on 446 screens during its sophomore stint in the U.K. and now has $7.93 million in that market in total.
