DVD Sales - A New Day on the Sales Chart
June 23, 2008
New releases dominated the sales chart this week, taking four of the top five spots. That included The Bucket List, which earned first place with 1.10 million units sold and $17.98 million in revenue.
Jumper placed a close second with 926,000 units sold for opening week revenue of $17.92 million. The only holdover in the top five was National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which managed to add 344,000 units and $5.52 million to its running tally of 5.26 million units and $83.86 million. Witless Protection opened in fourth place with 283,000 units / $5.30 million, while The Other Boleyn Girl rounded out the top five with 218,000 / $3.74 million.
Just missing the top five in seventh place was the mini-series, John Adams, which sold very well for this type of releases and pulled in $7.80 million from 200,000 units sold. The Boondocks - Season Two landed in 12th place with 96,000 units sold for opening week earnings of $3.46 million. The final new release to chart was The Rock: The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment, which placed 19th with 62,000 units / $1.18 million.
Blu-ray sales grew a staggering 27% to just under $13 million this week, which was just under 8% of the DVD sales opposed to just over 8% last week, as DVD sales rose even faster. Additionally, studios are predicting $1 billion in Blu-ray sales this year, which is not an outrageous amount. Granted, at this pace it would fall short. However, this is the slowest time of year for home market sales, and I would expect sales to slowly increase over the summer as a few people enter the high definition marketplace, while it will spike in the fall as the Christmas shopping season starts.
