International Top Five - Another Milestone for Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia! remained in first place with $20.27 million on 4303 screens in 45 markets for a total of $309.59 million. It is only the fifth film this year to reach $300 million internationally and I think most would agree it is the least likely. Openings this week were highlighted by France, where it made $2.4 million, which was enough for first place in that market. Additionally, it remained flat in South Korea adding $3.35 million on 518 screens for a total of $9.79 million after two weeks of release. It was not as strong in its opening in Mexico, on the other hand, placing second with just $785,000 on 292 screens. Strong holds and a number of markets remaining, it could hit $400 million internationally.
Hancock opened in first place in Italy with a massive $7.28 million on 613 screens, and this helped it jump into second place internationally. Overall the film made $10.55 million on 1534 screens in 24 markets for a total of $375.86 million, and even with almost no markets left to open in, it should reach $400 million internationally, while it has already reached $600 million worldwide.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor added $9.06 million on 3333 screens in 52 markets for a total of $249.50 million. Its haul this weekend was aided by a first place, $2.86 million opening on 362 screens in Australia, while it also opened in first place with $361,000 on 60 screens in neighboring New Zealand. Next up for the film is Italy, in two weeks, while it finishes its run in Greece in October.
Wanted climbed into the top five with $8.10 million on 2132 screens in 33 markets for a total of $157.41 million. This includes a first place opening in Spain with $3.15 million on 425 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.49 million. Meanwhile it added $1.74 million on 444 screens during its second weekend in Germany for a running tally of $5.76 million.
The Dark Knight nearly fell out of the top five with $7.33 million on 3709 screens in 52 markets for a total of $447.77 million internationally and $965.57 million worldwide. However, the film is starting to shed screens, and even markets, so its descent will start to accelerate.
