Good Night on the Home Market
May 5, 2007
New releases again dominated the rental charts as there were able to capture the top three spots, in fact, all three of these new releases were able to score more than last week's top film was able to. Leading the way was Night at the Museum with $11.56 million; this quite low compared to its theatrical box office of just over $250 million, but the younger target demographic explains this.
Déjà vu opened in second place with $8.64 million while The Queen was close behind with $7.51 million. Smokin' Aces did fall from first to fourth, but it only fell 13% to $5.81 million for the week and $12.49 in total. The Last King of Scotland also dropped 13% on its way to $5.56 million for the week and $11.96 million during its run.
There were a few other new releases that charted but failed to make the top ten, including Code Name: The Cleaner in tenth place with $3.44 million. Well back in 21st place was the direct-to-DVD release Slingshot with $1.78 million. Thr3e earned more during its opening week on the home market than it did during its entire theatrical run, but that was still only $1.21 million. Finally, 10 Items of Less managed 29th place with $1.03 million.
The sales chart was just as crowded with the same three films leading the way. However, while the rental charts were reasonably close, Night at the Museum outsold Déjà vu and The Queen combined by a larger than 2 to 1 margin. Like its performance on the rental chart, Smokin' Aces fell to fourth on the sales chart while Happy Feet remained in the top five for the fifth week in a row.
The list of other new releases to chart was led by Code Name: The Cleaner in seventh place. The rest of these releases were all in the TV on DVD category with NCIS Naval Criminal Investigative Service - The Complete Third Season placing 12th and Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series - Buy from Amazon placing 13th. There was another pair finishing back-to-back with WKRP in Cincinnati - The Complete First Season and Save the Wonder Pets opening in 18th and 19th places respectively.
