International Top Five - Shakeup in the Top Five

September 26, 2007

This week, three of the top five films were not in the top five last week, but despite all of the changes, The Bourne Ultimatum still earned an easy win. Over the weekend the spy thriller added $14.16 million on 3902 screens in 49 markets for a total of $145.59 million. The film had very few openings this past weekend, but did come out in first place in Portugal with $364,000 on 56 screens. The film was able to remain in first place in a number of markets, including France at $2.60 million on 510 screens for a total $7.53 million and Germany at $1.68 million on 717 screens for a total of $11.09 million. The film does have a few more markets to open in, (including Italy and Japan), and given its strong holds, it should hit $200 million before long and should earn more than the previous two installments of the franchise combined.

Resident Evil: Extinction opened day-and-date in a handful of markets earning second place with $7.88 million on 992 screens in 4 markets over the weekend and $8.14 million in total. Most of that came from Russia where it made $4.38 million on 482 screens while it made more than half the rest from Mexico where it also topped the charts with $2.12 million on 350 screens.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry jumped up into the third place with $5.10 million on 1661 screens in 28 markets for a total of $26.86 million. This includes openings in a few markets including the U.K. where it opened in third place with $2.21 million on 408 screens while it opened in second place in Poland with $128,000 on 48 screens. So far this film has not caught on with international audiences, but this is true of most Adam Sandler films.

The Simpsons Movie slipped to fourth place with $5.04 million on 1544 screens in 11 markets for a total of $332.06 million. Almost all of that came from Italy where it added $4.55 million on 595 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.19 million after two. The film should drop-off quite quickly from now on until it opens in Japan later in the year when it should return to the charts.

Superbad expanded this weekend into several more markets, but didn't really strike it rich in any of them, but combined it was able to climb into the top five. Overall it added $4.98 million on 1043 screens in 8 markets for a total of $9.91 million after just two weeks of release. The film struggled in Italy with just $452,000 on 221 screens for eighth place while it earned sixth place in Russia with $178,000 on 115. On the other hand, it did well in Australia with $1.80 million on 225 screens earning second place while it remained strong in the U.K. with $2.15 million on 402 screens for a total of $6.88 million and in the end it
