Oscar Contest - Category Highlight - Best Picture

March 1, 2006

With the Oscars less than a week away and our contest well under way, there's no better time to take a closer look at some of the nominees. Today we'll look at the most prestigious award, Best Picture.

Best Picture

Brokeback Mountain
Total Oscar Nominations: Eight
Previous Best Picture Nominations / Wins: Won PGA and Golden Globe.

Capote
Total Oscar Nominations: Five
Previous Best Picture Nominations / Wins: Nominated for PGA.

Crash
Total Oscar Nominations: Six
Previous Best Picture Nominations / Wins: Nominated for PGA.

Good Night and Good Luck
Total Oscar Nominations: Six
Previous Best Picture Nominations / Wins: Nominated for PGA and Golden Globe.

Munich
Total Oscar Nominations: Five
Previous Best Picture Nominations / Wins: None

Notes:

  • This category is a lot like the Best Achievement in Directing category, and not just because the same five movies were nominated for both. Each movie here has roughly the same odds of winner as their respective directors do, and for roughly the same reason.
  • It's widely expected to be a big night for Brokeback Mountain this Sunday, and one of the awards it is expected to win is Best Picture with an almost better chance to win than the rest of the field combined.
  • Of the rest of the pictures, Good Night and Good Luck probably has the best chance at scoring an upset but Crash would be close behind.
  • Capote will again suffer from Philip Seymour Hoffman syndrome. Too much attention was placed on his performance for it to win any of the other awards it was nominated for.
  • Finally, Munich may have earned five Oscar nominations, but it has almost no chance at this awards since its quality was below lofty expectations.
I hope this helps you pick your predictions in our contest. And remember, this is our biggest contest yet with plenty of prizes including...

The Girl Next Door - Unrated Edition
Two for the Money - Widescreen Edition
Streets of Legend
Curious George - Prize Pack include T-shirt, hat and soundtrack.
