Newcomers Earn Trifecta on Top of Home Market Charts

Three new DVDs topped the DVD Rental Charts, the VHS Rental Charts and the DVD Sales Charts, in the same order. Leading the way was the wonderful movie, Sideways with $6.70 million in DVD rentals and $1.03 million in VHS rentals. The film also lead the week in DVD sales with 1.5 million units sold on just its first day of release.

The other two new film were Elektra with $7.66 million in combined rentals, (just $70,000 behind the leader) and Spanglish with $7.32 million in combined rentals. The only holdovers in the top five were last week's winner, After the Sunset with $4.98 million and Finding Neverland with $4.21 million.

While we had new films in the top three spots, there was only one other new film in the top 40. That film was I Am David, a film that really struggled during its short theatrical release bringing in just $284,000. But it took in nearly twice that in combined rentals during its first week of release at $530,000.

The same three film that topped the rental charts also did the same on the DVD sales charts in the same order: Sideways Elektra and Spanglish. Rounding out the top five were The Incredibles in its fourth week of release and Closer in its second.

It was a good week for TV on DVD sales as Star Wars: Clone Wars - Volume 1 finished in eighth place, up one from last week. Also, the fourth seasons of both The West Wing and Queer as Folk debuted in the top twenty at fifteenth and seventeenth place respectively.
