International Details: Closed for the Holidays
December 31, 2005
As previously stated, in many markets the box office was closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and as a result some studios didn't tracks the international box office numbers. This has left precious little to report outside of a few big hits. What little there is to report is here.
Cheaper By The Dozen 2 opened in a trio of markets this past week scoring a second debut in Australia with $895,000 on 223 screens over the weekend and $1.41 million in total. It had to settle for fourth in Spain but still earned $848,000 on 302 screens. Meanwhile, the film managed second place in Puerto Rico with $160,000.
Fun with Dick and Jane opened in Australia on Boxing Day with $700,000 on 250 while it struggled in Japan with $500,000 on 140.
The Family Stone opened in third place in Mexico with $496,000 on 253 screens. On the other hand, the film plummeted in all three major markets it opened in last weekend down 54% in Germany to $404,000 on 258 screens, down 61% in the U.K. to $167,000 on 153 and down 81% in South Korea to just $39,000 on 31 screens.
Zathura had another disastrous opening when it made just $300,000 on 350 screens in Mexico, which is a country known to be very kind to family films.
And that's pretty much all the Hollywood movies being tracked. There were some local hits making waves over the weekend.
Typhoon remained in first place in South Korea adding $5.20 million from 500 screens to its $18.39 million running tally.
The Italian film, Natale A Miami, grew by 18% during its second weekend of release bringing in $4.24 million on 478 screens for a two-week total of $9.67 million.
The Art of Seduction just missed second place when it opened in South Korea with $3.39 million on 243 screens over the weekend and $4.59 million overall.
The Turkish film, Organize Isler, opened in first place in its native market with $3.18 million on 444 screens, which is more than three times as much as King Kong made when it opened there last week.
Ti Amo In Tutte Le Lingue Del Mondo also so growth in its home market of in Italy rising by 10% to $2.63 million for the weekend and $6.28 million in total.
Yamato slipped just 17% in Japan to $2.35 million on 293 screens for a $8.71 million total so far. It also became the faster grossing film for Toei, it distributor.
