Home Market Numbers: Gone to the Dogs
March 1, 2015
The new releases were not good, for the most part. The overall Blu-ray sales chart rose from last week, up 9.9% in terms of units and 16% in terms of sales. On the other hand, compared to last year, Blu-ray sales were down 15% in terms of units and 14% in terms of revenue. On the positive side, the DVD sales were even worse, so the overall Blu-ray share jumped up to 51%. That's an impressive figure, but before getting too excited, you have to remember that the number one selling Blu-ray, 101 Damlatians, didn't have a DVD release this week.
DVD sales were a disaster falling 28% in terms of units and 24% in terms of revenue when compared to last week. Things were even worse when compared to last year, as 52% fewer units were sold generating 54% less revenue.
Next week Game of Thrones: Season Four should lead the new releases and help the overall market bounce back, at least in terms of revenue. This week last year was also led by a Game of Thrones release, Season Three to be more specific. Season Four of the show broke ratings records, so perhaps that will mean it will also have the best opening on the home market. If so, the market will be a lot stronger than it was this week.
