International Box Office: Rogue gets $56.6 million Closer to $1 Billion
January 12, 2017
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story remained in first place with $56.6 million in 57 markets for totals of $437.1 million internationally and $914.5 million worldwide. It is now in fifth place on the 2016 worldwide chart. ... The entire top five worldwide is from Disney. This is unprecedented. As for this past weekend, Rogue One earned first place in China with $30.11 million over the weekend and $30.65 million including previews. This is on par with expectations, although some were worried it would struggle due to... I was going to say weather, but is smog weather? China is currently dealing with a smog crisis and has been issuing warnings to stay inside. This is the last market for the film, but it should cruise to $1 billion on holdovers. It will likely reach second place on the 2016 worldwide chart, but I think Captain America: Civil War is safe on the top of the chart.
Assassin’s Creed rose to second place with $45.0 million in 68 markets for totals of $98.0 million internationally and $147.9 million worldwide. The film earned first place in a trio of major markets, the largest of which was Russia, where it made $9.89 million on 1,268 screens. It also topped the chart in the U.K. with $6.51 million in 527 theaters and in Mexico with $3.8 million. The film still has a few major market left to open in, including Brazil this week and China next month.
Passengers rose to third place with $30.13 million in 76 markets over the weekend for totals of $97.25 million internationally and $178.16 million worldwide. The film’s biggest and best opening came in Germany, where it earned first place with $4.97 million on 887 screens. It earned third place in Brazil with $3.06 million on 491 screens, as well as in South Korea where it pulled in $2.55 million on 608 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.55 million.
Sing fell to fourth place with $26.4 million in 61 markets for totals of $143.5 million internationally and $358.0 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Italy, where it earned an estimated $4 million, including previews. The film opens in France and the U.K. at the end of the month, while it doesn’t finish its run until March when it opens in Russia, China, and Japan. By the time it’s done, it will have surpassed $500 million worldwide.
Moana remained in fifth place with $20.0 million in 38 markets for totals of $224.7 million internationally and $450.07 million worldwide. The film’s only major market opening of the weekend was Brazil, where it debuted with $4.6 million. This was only enough for second place over the weekend, but it was also the second best opening for Disney animated film of all time. Only Finding Dory had a better opening in this market.
