Theater Averages: Jane Towers Above the Competition with $15,726
April 26, 2017
There were only two films in the $10,000 club on this week's theater average chart and both of them were biographical documentaries. Interesting coincidence. Citizen Jane: Battle for the City led the way with an average of $15,726 in two theaters. Meanwhile, Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent just managed to hit the $10,000 mark with an average of $10,134, also in two theaters.
None of the rest of the new limited releases did particularly well. Slack Bay was the best of the rest with an average of just $3,348 in two theaters. 7 Witches opened with $1,875 in its lone theater. It was the wrong genre for limited release, but it should do a lot better on the home market. Finally, The Penguin Counters only managed $976 in its lone theater.
This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:
- Their Finest got to $1 million over the weekend. It is on pace to hit $2 million relatively soon, but $3 million will be a lot trickier.
- Colossal hit $1 million over the weekend and will very likely crack $2 million this coming weekend. However, its theater average is low enough that it won’t expand significantly beyond this point.
- T2: Trainspotting got to $2 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
- The Lost City of Z earned just over $2 million over the weekend. Its theater average is high enough that it might expand further. Even if it doesn’t expand significantly, it should get to $6 million with ease and has a shot at $10 million.
- Your Name reached $4 million over the weekend, which is amazing for an Anime release. Granted, this is the biggest Anime release worldwide, so it is not a surprise it is doing well here. I just hope it helps Anime become more mainstream.
- Gifted cracked $10 million over the weekend. This is better than a number of wide releases have managed in 2017, including The Space Between Us and A Cure for Wellness.
