Home Market Releases for July 4th, 2017
July 3, 2017
This is one of the worst weeks on the home market that I’ve seen. The summer is usually a bad time on the home market, but this year July 4th lands on Tuesday, which further hurts the quality of releases coming out this week. The biggest non-VOD release of the week is The Zookeeper’s Wife, which would be a secondary Blu-ray release on an average week. The second biggest release, Song to Song, did so poorly on the box office that it would be filler if it weren’t for its pedigree. As for the best new release of the week... Free Fire is coming out on Video on Demand. The reviews are good, but not really Pick of the Week material. I guess the best new release on this week’s list is HYOUKA: Part One. I think this is the first time an Anime TV series has been named Pick of the Week.

Video on Demand
A whistler-blower releases the name of the drone pilot involved in civilian deaths, the relative of some of the victims comes to get revenge. The reviews are bad, so bad that I don’t even think it is worth renting on VOD.
Great show and worth owning on DVD. On an average week, it wouldn’t be up here, but relegated to the TV on DVD Megasets section below.
This Anime is a high school mystery series that is earning excellent reviews on My Anime List. The Blu-ray combo pack doesn’t have any real extras, which is a shame, but it is still worth picking up for fans of the genre.
This release is too small to talk about, even on a week as shallow as this one. That said... 0% positive reviews? That’s unfair. It’s not a great movie, it’s not even a good movie, but it’s better than that.
Video on Demand
This film has an amazing amount of talent on both sides of the camera, but it only managed mixed reviews and really struggled at the box office. The only extra is a single behind-the-scenes featurette, which further hurts its overall value. I would wait till you can rent it on VOD.
Video on Demand
Debbie Gibson plays a fading pop star who leaves her home and returns to small town Ohio. There she becomes a music teacher and learns there’s more to life than fame. That sounds like a spoiler, but it is a Hallmark Channel original movie. These are not known for their originality. That said, I do like Debbie Gibson and these films, while unchallenging, can be a nice relaxing time.
Video on Demand
A documentary about the Amiga, which is one of two computers I grew up on. I put in a request to review this, but it hasn’t arrived yet.
Video on Demand
Jessica Chastain stars as the titular character. I think it is fair to call the film busted Oscar-bait, as it has all of the characteristics of an Awards Season film, except its reviews are merely good. That said, good reviews are a rarity on this week’s list. Extras include a making of featurette, a featurette on the real-life family, and some deleted scenes.

WWE: Fight Owens Fight: The Kevin Owens Story - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I’m surprised this is the first time An American Tail: Fievel Goes West has come out on Blu-ray. It’s not as good as the original, but you would think this sequel would have been released as part of a two-part years ago.
No 3D releases this week ...
And no 4K releases as well.
Homicide: Life On The Street - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I already mentioned this release above, but it is the only TV on DVD Megaset coming out this week.
13 Demons - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Ancient Aliens and the New World Order 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Boss Baby - Reviews - Video on Demand
Car Dogs - Reviews - Video on Demand
Free Fire - Reviews - Video on Demand
Hickok - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Murder She Baked: A Plum Pudding Mystery - Reviews - Video on Demand
Rwby: Chibi: Season One - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The Boss Baby is the biggest release of the week and it is good enough to entertain kids. Personally, I’m most interested in Rwby: Chibi: Season One.
