Weekend Wrap-Up: Quiet Retakes Top Spot, Rampage Right Behind

A Quiet Place

As expected, A Quiet Place returned to the first place with $20.94 million over the weekend. However, Rampage was much closer than expected with $20.09 million. It is on pace for $100 million domestically, assuming Infinity War doesn't reduce it to rumble this coming weekend. The new releases were led by I Feel Pretty, which came within a rounding error of expectations, while Super Troopers 2 beat expectations earning fourth place. Traffik barely made the top ten, but it could have been worse. Overall, the box office still fell 17% from last week, falling to $122 million. This is still 13% higher than the same weekend last year, which I was not expecting. I really thought The Fate of the Furious would earn more than the top two films earned this weekend, while the depth was also a lot better this week than I was anticipating. Year-to-date, 2017 is still behind 2018, by a 2.1% or $75 million margin at $3.43 billion to $3.51 billion. This should change this coming weekend. It better change.

A Quiet Place returned to top place with $20.94 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $131.27 million. The studio’s share of of this box office is likely over $70 million, so unless the film cost over $50 million to advertise, then film has already broken even, without taking into account the film’s international numbers.

Rampage was right behind with $20.09 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $65.69 million. At this pace, the film will have no trouble getting to $100 million, unless it evaporates under the pressure of Infinity War. Even a 60% decline next weekend might be enough to keep it on pace for $100 million domestically.

I Feel Pretty opened in third place with $16.03 million, which isn’t bad for a film that cost $32 million to make. I don’t think its legs will be good, as it only managed 34% positive reviews and its CinemaScore was a mere B plus.

Super Troopers 2 surprised analysts by earning a spot in the top five with $15.18 million during its opening weekend. Unfortunately for the film’s long-term efforts, it earned more than half of that on Friday, so its internal multiplier was just 1.91. Even for a film that earned 35% positive reviews, earned a B plus from CinemaScore, and is a sequel, this is still a low internal multiplier. We will have a better idea of the film’s legs by this time next week, but I’m not optimistic.

Truth or Dare rounded out the top five with $7.79 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $30.27 million. The film only cost $3.5 million to make, while its domestic advertising budget is probably around $20 million. At this pace, it will break even before it reaches the home market.

The final new release of the week, Traffik, earned ninth place with $3.94 million in just 1,046 theaters. This isn’t a good start, but it could have been much worse. Its reviews were the worst of the three wide releases this week, so I don’t expect it to stick around in theaters for very long.

The closest we had to a sophomore stint film was Isle of Dogs, which earned $3.46 million during its second weekend of semi-wide release. It has already topped Fantastic Mr. Fox’s domestic total, which is great news, but it will likely lose a lot of theaters this coming weekend.
