Limited and VOD Releases: Educate Yourself with some Limited Releases
August 3, 2018
It’s a short list this week, which is common for this time of year. The only film earning a lot of buzz is The Miseducation of Cameron Post, but its reviews will likely prevent it from doing well in theaters. Night Comes On is earning the best reviews, but it is also playing on Video on Demand, so it too won’t do well in theaters. Maybe Nico, 1988 will be a surprise hit.

Secondary VOD Releases:
This film only has five reviews, which would normally not be enough to be included here. However, I’m making an exception, for two reasons. Firstly, all five reviews are positive. Secondly, if I didn’t include it, it would be an unacceptably short list. This French film could do well in art house cinemas, but I don’t expect it to expand significantly.
This film is earning the loudest buzz of any of the limited releases on this week’s list. It stars Chloë Grace Moretz as the titular Cameron Post, an 18-year old girl forced to undergo conversion therapy. Unfortunately, while the buzz is good, the reviews suggest it will struggle in limited release. Perhaps a good opening weekend will be enough to help it thrive.
Maia Mitchell and Camila Morrone star as two women who work as waitresses in a small town diner, but who dream of making it to the big city. The film’s reviews are good, but not good enough to thrive in limited release.
Trine Dyrholm stars as the titular Nico, a singer-songwriter in her 50s who is convinced by her manager to go on tour. She has to deal with personal demons while trying to make up for past mistakes. The film’s reviews are over 90% positive and it could be a hit in limited release.
Video on Demand
Dominique Fishback stars as an 18-year old girl who is just released from juvenile detention. She has to take care of her 10-year old sister, but she wants to avenge her mother’s death. The film’s earning 100% positive reviews, but it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are nearly zero.
A 1949 French film about a group of teenagers who travel to Africa to make a realistic documentary. However, despite their ambitions, they are ill-equipped to deal with the challenges.
Urban Country - Reviews - Video on Demand
There’s only one secondary VOD release this week. It only has two reviews, but both of them are positive, so that’s a good sign.
