Friday Estimates: Friday Falls In Line
February 2, 2019
It looks like it will be a weekend to forget. In fact, if Friday is a reliable omen, then this will be the worst Super Bowl weekend at the box office in more than a decade. The only good news is, this was more or less expected. For example, Glass remained in first place with $2.76 million on Friday, putting it on pace for between $9 million on $10 million. Even if it hits the high end, it will still be within a rounding error of expectations. Get ready to read that phrase again a couple of more times this story.
Miss Bala was in a virtual tie for first place with $2.755 million, but it won’t stay there for long. Its reviews are certainly not going to help its legs, while there isn’t a CinemaScore to talk about. This is very odd. At this point, the film is on pace for an opening weekend of between $6 million and $7 million and even if it falls to the low end, it will still be within a rounding error of expectations.
The Upside landed in third place in Friday with $2.53 million. It will climb into second place with between $8 million and $9 million over the full weekend, which is, at most, within a rounding error of expectations.
As for that glut of films fighting for fourth place, it was there, for the most part. In fact, Aquaman and Green Book tied for fourth place with $1.27 million, while Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and The Kid Who Would Be King earned $1.12 million and $1.04 million respectively. It’s too soon to tell how they will shake out when the final weekend numbers hit.
The only film that was expected to be in the mix that wasn’t was They Shall Not Grow Old, which struggled landing in ninth place with $880,000 on Friday. It should remain in the top ten over the full weekend, but barely.
