Daily Box Office Tracking: Endgame Becomes Hollywood’s Chinese Champion
May 2, 2019
Avengers: Endgame set yet another record when it earned $70.4 million on May 1st in China lifting its total to $459.4 million in that market. The film became the highest grossing western film of all time, topping the previous champion The Fate of the Furious.
It wasn’t a holiday domestically, but the film still managed $25.2 million on Wednesday for a six-day running tally of $452.3 million. This is much further down the all-time chart than it has been most other days. However, this is because Wednesday is a much more common release day and like before, every film above it is either that film’s opening day, or it was a holiday. The film is still behind Age of Ultron on the M.C.U., but it won’t stay there for long. Meanwhile, it rose to 17th place on the all time domestic chart.
Internationally, the movie earned $157.8 million for a total of $1.212 billion. The film has entered the top five on the all-time international chart and currently sits in second place. It is currently behind Infinity War and it will take a couple of days to overtake its predecessor. On the worldwide chart, the film’s running tally hit $1.664 billion, putting it just ahead of Jurassic World on that chart.
I already mentioned the film’s Chinese numbers, but the May Day holiday also boosted the film in a number of other major markets. This includes Mexico, where film earned $7.9 million for a running tally of $48.6 million. It earned $6.3 million in Brazil and in Russia, giving the film a running tally in those markets of $40.4 million and $19.3 million, respectively. The film also topped $5 million in South Korea with $5.5 million for the day and a total of $60.3 million.
