Theater Averages: 1917 Helps 2020 Start on a Strong Note

January 9, 2020

1917

There were three films in the $10,000 club, all of them holdovers. 1917 led the way with an average of $56,154 in 11 theaters, which is 7% higher than its opening weekend. I’m very excited for its wide expansion this weekend. On the other hand, Just Mercy fell to an average of $19,154 in four theaters. That’s still good, but perhaps not good enough to thrive in wide release. We finally got numbers for Ashfall as its distributor was closed over the Christmas break. The film earned an average of $16,198 in two theaters during its third weekend of release.

There were no new limited releases that had any box office numbers released. This is not that unusual for the first weekend of the year.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • A Hidden Life hit $1 million after four weeks of release. $2 million is within grasp.
  • Ip Man: The Finale hit $2 million before the weekend, but the drop in its theater count could scare away too many theater owners for it to expand significantly beyond this point.
  • On the other hand, 1917 will expand this weekend, having reached $2 million in just two weeks of limited release.
  • Bombshell got to $20 million just before the weekend and it was just shy of $25 million by the end of the weekend.
