Streaming Releases: Shining a Light in the Shadows
April 18, 2020
Netflix again dominates the list of streaming debuts; however, they don’t have the best new releases. The ones I’m most interested in are Mrs. America and especially What We Do in the Shadows. Interestingly, both are on Hulu.

Netflix
A mediocre thriller about a gang looking for hidden drugs. There are better options out there, but if you have Netflix then it doesn’t cost you anything extra to watch it, besides your time.
Netflix
A Spanish murder mystery movie that is part of a franchise. The film only has three reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all three are positive. That said, none of them are enthusiastic.
Netflix
A German film about real estate fraud. There are almost no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and the ones that are there are mixed, at best.
Netflix
A real-life story of a UN diplomat in Baghdad for one last mission before an extended break. However, his hotel is the target of a bombing. The reviews are mixed, but if you have Netflix, then there’s no harm in giving it a try.
Netflix
From the creator of Black-ish. However, while it earned a lot of hype as a result, its reviews are much weaker than anticipated with many critics comparing it to the average sitcom.
Amazon Prime
Titus Welliver stars as the titular Bosch in this police detective show. There are not enough reviews to judge this season, but looking at its past performance gives fans high hopes for this one.
Netflix
The third season of this show currently only has two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but they are both positive. Additionally, the first two seasons both ended up with 100% positive reviews, so fans are used to high quality. If you’ve never seen the show, but an action / thriller set in the Israeli / Palestinian conflict interests you, then this show is certainly worth checking out.
Apple TV
A documentary series about the world’s most extravagant homes. This could be great escapism for those trapped inside, or something much more infuriating.
Netflix
A documentary series about The Innocence Project, the organization that looks into potential wrongful convictions. The show only has five reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all five of them are positive, so that’s a good sign.
Netflix
This cartoon was co-created by Pendleton Ward, who previously created Adventure Time. This show isn’t as good, but it is still worth checking out.
Hulu
A biographical series about Phyllis Schlafly, as played by Cate Blanchett. The show is earning some of the best reviews on this week’s list; in fact, its reviews are award-worthy. Hulu isn’t as popular as Netflix, so not as many people will have a chance to see it, but if you have Hulu, then it is your best bet.
Netflix
A group of poor teens search for treasure using a treasure map connected to the disappearance of the father. This sounds like the setup to a kids show, but the “teens” in show all look like they are being played by actors in their 20s. The reviews are fine, but nothing special.
Official Site
The second season of this acclaimed show began this week, first on FX and then streaming on Hulu. Fans of the original movie should be very happy to get a second season of the TV show, as it is just as good as its source material.
Netflix
A reality TV show, which is a genre I hate. Furthermore, it is a dating reality TV show, which is a subgenre I despise. If it’s your thing, have at it.
