VOD Releases: (P)Revenge on the Mind

August 19, 2020

Prevenge

It is another week of quantity over quality on VOD, with only a handful of films earning significant buzz and overall positive reviews. The noteworthy films include of couple of documentaries, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind and Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story, as well as a biopic, Tesla. However, the long-delayed horror flick, Prevenge, could be the biggest hit, as horror films have done well during the pandemic. It doesn’t have the star power Tesla has, but it has better reviews.

Highlights

Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind
iTunes
A documentary about Canadian singer-songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. The reviews are excellent and it does cost just $10 to purchase on iTunes. It is worth it if you are a fan of biographical documentaries in general and it is especially if you are a fan of Gordon Lightfoot, of course.

Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story
Amazon
A documentary about the making of the Tony Hawk video game series. That doesn’t sound like a particularly interesting subject for a movie, but the reviews are among the best on this week’s list. In fact, while it will obviously appeal to fans of Tony Hawk, or of skateboarding in general, all fans of documentaries will get something out of it.

Prevenge
Vudu
Prevenge follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree that’s as funny as it is vicious. Her misanthropic unborn baby is dictating Ruth's actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims. This film was made over four years ago and first appeared on a release list like this three years ago. It is also out on DVD and Blu-ray, but it is just a $3 rental on Vudu, so I would argue that’s a good investment. “Try before you buy” is a good idea, especially when the initial cost is so low, and given the premise for the film.

Tesla
iTunes
Ethan Hawke stars as the brilliant visionary Nikola Tesla fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition, then faces thornier challenges with his new system for worldwide wireless energy. Hawke has four Oscar nominations, but no wins, so far. This film won’t get him that win, because while he’s earning praise for his performance, the overall movie is merely good and not great. It makes its debut on Friday as a purchase, but, given its critical reception so far, it would probably be a good idea to wait until you can rent it.
