Weekend projections: Zootopia returns to the top of the chart as Ella McCay disappoints

December 14, 2025

A still from Zootopia 2

With Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 taking a predictably steep drop from its opening weekend, Zootopia 2 returns to top billing this weekend, in spite of a 39% drop of its own on its third weekend in theaters. Zootopia now stands at $259 million domestically, and a mighty $877.7 million internationally, for a global total of $1.136 billiion. That makes it the top global performer of the year for a US studio movie.

Here are the official studio projections for the three-day weekend (click the image for a full chart of all films reporting so far):

Ella McCay’s $2.1 million on debut is a disappointment, and only enough for seventh place on the chart. One of the films above it, Dhurandhar, hasn’t reported an official total for the weekend, but we’re hearing it’ll make something around $3.5 million in its second weekend—up a remarkable 65% from its opening. Hopefully we’ll get an official number on Monday.

Likewise, The Shining, which should round out the top 10, with around $1.5 million, but doesn’t have an official number yet.

Overall, we’re looking at a weekend that is down by more than half compared to last weekend, and 18% behind the same weekend last year. Hopefully, that’s just the calm before the Holiday storm.
