2019 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III - Limited Releases, Classics, Foreign Imports

The first two installments of our Holiday Gift Guide had plenty of first-run releases and several TV on DVD releases. This installment includes limited releases and foreign imports. The list of classics isn’t up to the usual standards for the same reasons the TV on DVD list was rather short. Streaming is taking over that part of the market. Did you know The Criterion Collection has their own streaming service? So does Magnolia Pictures. On the one hand, that’s a lot of amazing movies for one price. Home Market Releases for May 14th, 2019

It’s another weak week on the home market. The biggest release of the week is Fighting With My Family, which is also one of the best. The other contenders for Pick of the Week are a documentary, Apollo 11; a classic collection, The Buster Keaton Collection: Volume 1; and a foreign-language import, Princess Mononoke. They are all worth owning, but they all have issues as well. The last two releases are double-dips, while the first two don’t have a ton of extras. In the end, I went with Fighting With My Family as the Pick of the Week, because it has the best combination of movie quality and extras without being a double-dip. More...

Theater Averages: Dumbo is Lonely at the Top

Dumbo was the only film in the $10,000 Club at the weekend, as it earned an average of $10,798 while earning first place on the overall chart. The best limited release was Diane, which earned an average of $8,156 in three theaters. More...

The Mustang topped the theater average chart with an average of $17,914 in four theaters. Last week’s number one film, Captain Marvel, slipped to second with a still impressive average of $15,775. Captain Marvel has a Glorious Opening

Captain Marvel led the way on the Theater Average Chart, but it didn’t dominate like it did on the overall weekend chart. It did earn the best average of the year so far at $35,599. The second place film, Gloria Bell, had the third best theater average of the year so far with an average of $29,044 in five theaters. Finally, Babylon opened with $21,214 in its lone theater, which is enough for the seventh place for the year. It was a good weekend at the box office. More...

Theater Averages: Climactic Results Over the Weekend

It was a really busy week on the Theater Average Chart with a ton of films to talk about, including six films in the $10,000 club. This list was led by Climax with an average of $23,885 in five theaters. Transit was next with an average of $15,966 in two theaters. Giant Little Ones and Apollo 11 had nearly identical averages of $13,500 and $13,392 respectively, but were playing in vastly different number of theaters at 1 and 120 respectively. Furie was a surprise entry in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,151 in 14 theaters. There was only one wide release in the $10,000 club, as Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral earned an average of $11,082. More...

Weekend Estimates: Dragons Stay Afloat, Medea Ends on a High Note

According to estimates, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World really bounced back on Saturday and its Sunday number will help it earn first place over the weekend with $30.05 million. This is lower than predictions and a sophomore decline of 48% is a little steep for a family film. That said, the film is nearly at $100 million domestically after just 10 days and its worldwide total is at $375 million, again according to estimates. The film opened in first place in China with $33.38 million in approximately 10,000 locations. The film’s only remaining major market is Japan, but it doesn’t open there until August. In the meantime, the film should have little trouble getting to $500 million worldwide before then. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Climactic Change in Pace

After two weeks of almost no releases, there are nearly 30 limited releases coming out this week. However, it’s a case of quantity above quality, for the most part, as the majority of films have no or almost no reviews. That said, the majority of films with a substantial number of reviews are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Some of these films, like Climax and Apollo 11, are even earning a combination of amazing reviews and loud buzz. Hopefully this means we will have some hits on this week’s list and the competition won’t sink everyone’s chances. More...
