Featured DVD / Blu-ray Review: Stallone: 3-Film Collector's Set

When The Expendables came out in 2010, Lionsgate released a flood of Blu-ray double-shots featuring the cast of the film. This time around, they are releasing a Stallone Triple-Shot on Blu-ray. It's a really soft week for releases. Granted, Harry Potter came out last week and it is likely still going to be selling quite well this week. But the best release of Tuesday, at least according to Amazon.com, is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on DVD. Normally this would be a huge release, but it came out on Blu-ray weeks ago. The same is true of the second best selling release, The Lion King. The most of the next several best selling releases are Blu-ray catalog titles. Granted, many are worth picking up, but it could still be a really slow week in terms of overall sales. That doesn't mean it is a slow week in terms of high quality releases. West Side Story is coming out on Blu-ray, My Fair Lady is also making its Blu-ray debut. There are several more catalogue titles getting a Blu-ray double-dip, like Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition, or the latest Blu-ray for Metropolis. TV on DVD is well represented with Farscape: The Complete Series (Blu-ray), Being Human: Season One on Blu-ray, and Awkward: Season One. Beginners on Blu-ray is also a Contender for Pick of the Week, as is Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Volume One: Blu-ray Ultimate Collector's Edition. In the end I went with Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition. It is a double-dip, but there are major improvements over the previous release, plus it is a bargain price at just $11, and given the number of prime releases coming out this week, a bargain price is certainly welcome. Sylvester Stallone was one of the biggest action stars in the 1980s with two major franchises: Rocky and Rambo. However, by the late 1990s, his box office numbers were way down. His reputation for making quality films had also taken a beating. Granted, he made more than a few stinkers in the 1980s, but many saw Cop Land as a sign that he could make high quality films like Rocky or First Blood and this might revitalize his career. The selection of home market releases is rather soft this week. Sure, Cars 2 was a major hit at the box office, but it is the only major hit on this week's list. The best selling TV on DVD release is Californication, which is a cable show, while the top ten selling titles according to Amazon.com include limited releases, catalogue titles and direct-to-DVD releases. There are more second-tier Christmas releases than any other type of release. There are far fewer titles that are worth picking up than last week, and the the Pick of the Week contenders are even more limited. Transformers: Beast Wars comes out on a Complete Series Collection and that could be Pick of the Week material, but I'm still waiting for the screener. More...

Featured DVD / Blu-ray Review: Stallone: 3-Film Collector's Set

When The Expendables came out in 2010, Lionsgate released a flood of Blu-ray double-shots featuring the cast of the film. This time around, they are releasing a Stallone Triple-Shot on Blu-ray. I have seen two of the three movies, but wanted to see what they looked like in high definition. Unfortunately, they sent me the DVD. Is it still worth checking out? More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 15th, 2011

It's a really soft week for releases. Granted, Harry Potter came out last week and it is likely still going to be selling quite well this week. But the best release of Tuesday, at least according to Amazon.com, is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on DVD. Normally this would be a huge release, but it came out on Blu-ray weeks ago. The same is true of the second best selling release, The Lion King. The most of the next several best selling releases are Blu-ray catalog titles. Granted, many are worth picking up, but it could still be a really slow week in terms of overall sales. That doesn't mean it is a slow week in terms of high quality releases. West Side Story is coming out on Blu-ray, My Fair Lady is also making its Blu-ray debut. There are several more catalogue titles getting a Blu-ray double-dip, like Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition, or the latest Blu-ray for Metropolis. TV on DVD is well represented with Farscape: The Complete Series (Blu-ray), Being Human: Season One on Blu-ray, and Awkward: Season One. Beginners on Blu-ray is also a Contender for Pick of the Week, as is Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Volume One: Blu-ray Ultimate Collector's Edition. In the end I went with Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition. It is a double-dip, but there are major improvements over the previous release, plus it is a bargain price at just $11, and given the number of prime releases coming out this week, a bargain price is certainly welcome. Featured Blu-ray Review: Cop Land

Sylvester Stallone was one of the biggest action stars in the 1980s with two major franchises: Rocky and Rambo. However, by the late 1990s, his box office numbers were way down. His reputation for making quality films had also taken a beating. Granted, he made more than a few stinkers in the 1980s, but many saw Cop Land as a sign that he could make high quality films like Rocky or First Blood and this might revitalize his career. That didn't happen. In fact, he didn't star in a good movie till Rocky Balboa. Was his attempt at dramatic acting a bust? Or was there something else going on? More...

The selection of home market releases is rather soft this week. Sure, Cars 2 was a major hit at the box office, but it is the only major hit on this week's list. The best selling TV on DVD release is Californication, which is a cable show, while the top ten selling titles according to Amazon.com include limited releases, catalogue titles and direct-to-DVD releases. There are more second-tier Christmas releases than any other type of release. There are far fewer titles that are worth picking up than last week, and the the Pick of the Week contenders are even more limited. Transformers: Beast Wars comes out on a Complete Series Collection and that could be Pick of the Week material, but I'm still waiting for the screener. More...
