Contest: Bourne Bequest

August 3rd, 2012

The Bourne Legacy will dominate new releases next weekend, but will it live up to its predecessors? Regardless of the answer to that question, it is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for The Bourne Legacy. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Impostor on Blu-ray. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Dirty Pretty Things on Blu-ray Finally, one other entrant will be chosen regardless of what they predicted, and they will win the last copy of Darkness on Blu-ray. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 17th, 2012

July 17th, 2012

It's broken record time. As is usual for this time of year, it is a slow week on the home market. There are two first run releases coming out, Lockout and The Three Stooges, but neither film was a box office hit. On the other hand, there are a number of catalogue titles (Singin' In the Rain); limited releases (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen); and TV on DVD releases (Sanctuary: The Complete Fourth Season). All three of those releases are contenders for Pick of the Week, but in the end I went with Leverage: Season Four. More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: Dirty Pretty Things

July 16th, 2012

Dirty Pretty Things stars, among others, Audrey Tautou and Chiwetel Ejiofor. She was still fresh in everyone's mind for Amélie, one of the biggest foreign language hits of all time. This was only his third movie, but his second was Amistad, which had earned a lot of praise. Dirty Pretty Things was still a smaller film being released by a min-major, so few expected it to be a big hit. However, while it did well in limited release, it missed modest expectations at the box office. Is it a good film that should have performed better? More...

DVD Releases for March 23, 2004

March 22nd, 2004

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. Remember last week when I said it was a slow week cause no new release finished on Amazon's Top Ten Sales Chart? This week no new release is in the top 25 and only 2 in the top 50. In a week dominated by box office flops, not-so-special special editions and nearly featureless limited releases, it was a rock band that took my DVD Pick of the Week. Weezer - Video Capture Device 1991-2002 - (Buy from Amazon) is the only DVD I plan to pick up tomorrow. But there are a couple of rentals on the list. More...
