Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

Blu-ray Sales: Blu Blood Good for Business

June 15th, 2011

True Blood: Season Three was able to lead the way on the Blu-ray sales chart this week, and while the margin was closer than it was on the DVD sales chart, it was still dominant. It started its Blu-ray run with sales of 199,000 units / $7.09 million, which is amazing for a TV on Blu release, although the comparison is difficult, as most TV on DVD releases don't have a Blu-ray release. Likewise, its 20% Blu-ray ratio seems impressive for this type of release; however, there are so few TV on Blu releases that it's hard to judge. More...

DVD Sales - Getting Hitched to Proposal

October 27th, 2009

The Proposal led all new releases and totally dominated the sales chart this week selling 2.41 million units generating $39.26 million in the process. More...

DVD Sales - Monster Headache on Sales Chart

October 20th, 2009

It's a bit of a mess on the DVD Sales chart this week as there are two releases that can claim top spot. We have Monsters vs. Aliens repeating on top with 721,000 units for the week giving it totals of 2.96 million units and $51.51 million. However, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released this week and sold an estimated 1.5 million units of their DVD/Blu-ray combo pack. This is where things get confusing. The studio has decided to declare these as Blu-ray units. That's enough to be the number one selling DVD for the week, and enough to be one of the best selling Blu-rays of all time. The latter is probably the reason Disney did this, and it could really boost Blu-ray player sales over the holiday shopping season. More...

DVD Sales - Wicked Witches Strong, but Monsters Prevail

October 14th, 2009

This week, we saw a more manageable list of new releases reaching the top 30 on the sales chart, with five new titles and one re-release appearing, compared to a total of nine last week. Leading the way was Monsters vs. Aliens with 2.19 million units sold for opening week consumer spending at retail of $38.20 million. More...

DVD Sales - Origins On Top

October 7th, 2009

There were a ton of new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart; however, X-Men Origins - Wolverine remained in top spot with 595,000 units / $10.74 million over the week for a total of 3.02 million / $50.94 million after two. It is already in the top ten for the year. More...

DVD Rentals - Past Catches Up to Home Market

October 7th, 2009

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past led all new releases topping the rental chart this week with more than twice the number of rentals as X-Men Origins - Wolverine managed. More...

DVD Sales - New Releases Slice Up the Chart

September 29th, 2009

There were more than ten new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart, including the first summer blockbuster to reach the home market. That film, X-Men Origins - Wolverine, took top spot with a massive 2.42 million units and $40.20 million in consumer spending at retail in its opening week. More...

DVD Rentals - Wolverine Cuts Down the Competition

September 29th, 2009

There were not as many new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's rental chart as there were on the sales chart, but the same film topped both. X-Men Origins - Wolverine earned first place with more than 2.5 times as many rentals as State of Play, which was pushed into second place after two weeks on top. More...

DVD Releases for September 29th, 2009

September 28th, 2009

This week there are not that many releases on this week's list, but there a few releases at the very top that are worthy of being the DVD Pick of the Week. Monsters vs. Aliens is certainly in that list, but until the DVD and Blu-ray shows up, I can't confirm if it's a DVD Pick of the Week of merely a must buy. Wizard of Oz - 70th Anniversary Edition on either DVD or Blu-ray Gift-set is DVD Pick of the Week material. More...

International Details - Dusk for Ice Age

September 19th, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell out of the top five this past weekend earning $7.08 million on 3521 screens in 35 markets for a total of $670.44 million internationally and $865.11 million worldwide. It is now the third highest grossing film internationally of all time, while it is 18th place worldwide. That's quite a gap. The film remained in first place in Italy earning $3.14 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.63 million after three. So far the film has earned more than 77% of its worldwide box office internationally, which is a very high percentage, and it will keep creeping higher as its international run comes to a close. DVD Releases for September 15th, 2009 - Part II

September 15th, 2009

The Christmas shopping season starts early this year, as it seems to do every year. Only 15 days into September we have the first summer blockbuster of the year coming out. While X-Men Origins - Wolverine will easily be the biggest release of the week, it won't be the best. I think the best selections out there are from the TV on DVD categories, which is common this time of year, and I would rank Sanctuary - Season One and Transformers - Season Two - Volume One as the best of the best and both are my pick for the DVD Pick of the Week. There was a large number of spotlight reviews, including a trio that arrived late, so the list had to be split into two. The first part can be found here. More...

International Details - Terminating Another Milestone

June 28th, 2009

Terminator Salvation fell to second place with $18.94 million on 9263 screens in 71 markets over the weekend, for a total of $200.84 million internationally and $320.57 million worldwide. The film has been troubled by sharp drop-offs internationally, and that was certainly the case this past weekend, as it was down 65% in Japan. Japan. It was down 65% in Japan, which is a market known for its strong holds. It still added $3.72 million on 697 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.70 million after two, but that's a sharper decline than anticipated. More...

International Details - Racing Towards Milestones

June 14th, 2009

Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian was pushed into second place in the international chart, but still added $27.88 million on 8350 screens in 66 markets while it lifted its international total to $149.55 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $4.33 million on 669 screens over the weekend and $4.75 million in total. It also remained in first place in China with $2.1 million on 818 screens over the weekend and $12.2 million in total, but that was a huge drop-off from last week. On the other hand, the film improved by 18% in the U.K. with $3.96 million on 509 screens over the weekend for a running tally of $25.31 million after three. That's better than the film's performance here, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets. The film opens in Mexico this weekend, and in Japan in August. It has likely reached $300 million worldwide already, and could make it all the way to $400 million before it is done. This is a drop-off from its predecessor, but the film is still well on its way to profitability and will get there before it reaches the lucrative home market. More...

International Details - Terminator's Salvation Yet to Come

June 7th, 2009

Terminator Salvation opened worldwide this weekend, but we won't have those numbers till Wednesday. In the meantime, it earned third place with $13.37 million on 1283 screens in 12 markets for a total of $25.52 million. Most of this has come from South Korea, where it slipped to second place with $4.21 million on 713 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.52 million after two. So far the film has been a disappointment domestically, but it can salvage its run with a massive box office next weekend on the international stage. If it does so, profitability will be assured, but that's a big 'if'. More...

International Details - Still Treking

May 31st, 2009

Star Trek slipped to third place on the international chart with $11.34 million on 5069 screens in 56 markets for a total of $87.68 million. It has now made more internationally than the previous film made worldwide. The film's best market was the U.K. where it has made $24.37 million, including $2.60 million on 474 screens this past weekend. As for future releases, it opens in Japan this weekend, while it has yet to open in Mexico, India, and other markets. More...

International Details - Trek Reaches Milestone

May 24th, 2009

Star Trek's second weekend of release on the international chart was not as strong as it was domestically as it dropped 44% to 20.02 million on 5782 screens in 55 markets, but it lifted its total of $67.89 million internationally and it became the first in the franchise to reach $200 million worldwide. The film opened in China, but box office numbers were not released. We do have details on most holdovers, including the U.K., where it added $5.27 million on 498 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.42 million after two. The only other multi-million market was Australia, where it earned $2.04 million on 317 screens giving it a total of $6.66 million. More...

Weekend Box Office Ends Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell

May 18th, 2009

There were mixed results at the weekend box office as Angels and Demons missed the low end of most analysts' expectations, which led to an 8% decline in box office numbers from last weekend. However, at $137 million, it was up 4.2% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has brought in $3.62 billion compared to last year's pace of $3.13 billion, which is an increase of close to 16%. More...

International Details - Wolverine is Cut Down, but Still Fighting Hard

May 17th, 2009

Wolverine was pushed into second place on the international chart with $28.95 million on 8982 screens in 93 markets for a total of $121.58 million. This was a 60% drop-off, but that was better than it was domestically, and it appears $300 million worldwide is a sure bet. The film was pushed into third place in the U.K., but still managed a healthy $3.39 million on 484 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.47 million. It remained in first place in France with $3.95 million on 700 screens, but that was for the full week giving the film $11.80 million after two. It also finished in first place in Brazil with $2.11 million on 609 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.81 million after two. Next up for the film is Mexico, where it opens at the end of May, while it ends its run in Japan in August. More...

Summer Looks to Continue its Angelic Run

May 15th, 2009

Summer looks to go three for three with the release of Angels and Demons. On the one hand, so far 2009 has been amazing at the box office with almost no movie really faltering. On the other hand, the original did not impress critics and that could hurt this film's run. That said, this time last year was a little weaker than expected as Prince Caspian stumbled out of the gate. More...

Star Trek Travels a Lonely Road on the Per Theater Chart

May 13th, 2009

The overall box office leader, Star Trek, was the only $10,000 film over the weekend, earning an impressive average of $20,578. Second place went to Wolverine, which was way back at $6,443. More...

Star Trek Soars Higher

May 12th, 2009

It was a good news / bad news type of weekend, but I think it is safe to say the good news outshone the bad news. Yes, the overall box office was down 5.5% from last weekend to $149 million, but that was just shy of 20% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has now amassed an impressive $3.44 billion compared to just $2.96 billion this time last year. That's an increase of 16% over last year, which is an unbelievable pace, one that I assume 2009 will not be able to keep up. However, each dollar earned now is one less dollar needed to be earned at the end of the year to keep pace with inflation. More...

Where No Star Trek Film has Gone Before

May 8th, 2009

A delayed column this week as my new computer is still on route. (Short Story Version: My hard drive was more corrupted than expected, and it is taking longer to retrieve my data, which includes all my bookmarks and passwords. I know, dumb of me not to have them written down.) There is only one film that has a real shot at number one, Star Trek, while there is little doubt the overall box office will beat this week last year. More...

International Top of the Chart - Wolverine Slices Up the Competition

May 7th, 2009

Wolverine opened worldwide over the weekend and easily won the race to the top of the international box office. During its opening weekend, it managed $73.11 million on 9364 screens in 101 markets. This includes number on openings in many major markets, the best of which was the U.K. at $9.93 million on 488 screens, which was triple its nearest competition. More...

X Marks the Top of the Per Theater Chart

May 5th, 2009

There was only one film to top $10,000 on the per theater charts; in fact, there was only one film that care reasonably close. Wolverine was that one film as it topped both the per theater chart and the overall chart with an average of $20,751 in more than 4000 theaters. Second place went to Three Monkeys with $8,818 in just one theater. More...

Wolverine Win Weekend, Can't Take Down Iron Man

May 4th, 2009

The first weekend of summer was a success, mostly. Overall the weekend ticket sales amounted to $158 million, which was 39% more than last weekend. It was below the same weekend last year, but by less than 1%. Year-to-date 2009 has now made $3.25 billion, which is 16% more than last year's pace, If 2009 can simply maintain pace with 2008 over the summer, most in the industry will be ecstatic, so this is a fine start. Weekend Estimates: Wolverine Tops Chart with Muscular $87 Million

May 3rd, 2009

X-Men Origins: Wolverine made an impressive opening over the weekend, according to studio estimates, with $87 million. While that's a little behind Iron Man's massive opening this weekend last year, it's still a good start to the summer season. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past helped the weekend beat last year's total by pulling in a better-than-expected $15.3 million. More...

Wolverine Ready to Slice Up the Competition

May 1st, 2009

Summer is finally here, and everyone wants to know if 2009 can keep up its blazing pace. I'm going to say no, simply because the law of averages says the box office should return to the mean. That could start this weekend and last year's top film will be very tough to beat. More...

2009 Preview: May

May 1st, 2009

Last May was strong with two films that cracked $300 million at the box office. This May we might not have any movies reach that milestone. Then again, there are six films that have a shot to reach $200 million. I'm not saying all of them will get there, but I would be surprised if at least two of them don't get there, while all six should reach at least $100 million, which is two more than the same month last year. There are also a few midlevel hits in the waiting, as a few limited releases of note. This latter category includes The Brothers Bloom, Departures, and Pontypool. More...

Contest - Be the Best There Is at What You Do

April 24th, 2009

Summer finally starts and we have what should be the biggest release of the year, so far as Wolverine is opening mega-wide. More importantly, it is the target film in this week's contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Wolverine. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of iCarly - Season One - Volume Two on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Ron White - Behavioral Problems on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday, May 1 to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

More...

October 7th, 2009

DVD Sales - New Releases Slice Up the Chart

DVD Rentals - Wolverine Cuts Down the Competition

September 29th, 2009

There were not as many new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's rental chart as there were on the sales chart, but the same film topped both.

More...

X Marks the Top of the Per Theater Chart

May 5th, 2009

There was only one film to top $10,000 on the per theater charts; in fact, there was only one film that care reasonably close.

More...
