Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Inside Out 2 remains widest release after a stellar opening weekend

June 20th, 2024

Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 was off and running at the domestic box office last weekend as the animated sequel over-performed most predictions (including ours), pulling in an outstanding $154.2 million in its opening three-day frame. Possibly even more impressive yet, the film has increased its daily box office since Monday, when it posted $22.42 million in earnings. The film took in $28.83 million on Tuesday and $30.1 million on Wednesday, the latter marking the third largest non-opening Wednesday at the box office of all time. Once again playing in 4,440 locations, the Pixar film should have no trouble staying atop the chart. More...

Theater counts: Garfield claws its way to widest release on a slow weekend

May 30th, 2024

The Garfield Movie

The Memorial Day weekend box office turned out to be a disappointment in what should have been a healthy four-day stretch to kick off the Summer movie season. Topping the domestic charts were two of the three newcomers, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly edging out The Garfield Movie, with $32.34 million to $31.26 million from Friday through Monday. This weekend will undoubtedly see the two reigning leaders remain on top, although there’s a good chance the roles will be reversed. More...

Theater counts: IF narrowly tops Garfield to become widest release on its second weekend in theaters

May 23rd, 2024

IF

IF made its theatrical debut last weekend and took in a respectable $33.72 million in its opening attempt, making it the top movie at the domestic box office. The John Krasinski-directed film was relegated to second place as the widest release, but will itself play spoiler to another newcomer as it becomes the widest-playing film in the land this week. Another trio of new films make their appearance this week, including another animated feature in the way of everyone’s favorite comic book cat, as The Garfield Movie makes its arrival into North American cinemas. Featured TV on DVD Review: The Garfield Show: Spring Fun Collection

February 19th, 2013

The Garfield comic strip was first published 35 years ago and since then has broken records and is the most widely syndicated comic strip of all time. It has also been turned into countless specials, a couple live action movies, and a couple TV shows. The Garfield Show first aired in 2008 and is still on the air today. This week, a DVD with six shorts, Spring Fun Collection, comes out. What episodes are on the DVD and is it worth checking out for fans of the comic? More...
